The AINAVI car stereo is a replacement touchscreen head unit made for the 2002-2006 Toyota Camry. It brings wireless CarPlay and Android Auto to a car that left the factory with a basic radio, and a backup camera comes in the box. Here is what its features mean in practice.

How it fits the 2002-2006 Camry

The unit comes mounted in a dash frame shaped for this generation of Camry, and AINAVI describes it as plug-and-play: no wire cutting or dash modifications are needed. Plug-and-play head units usually connect to the car's existing wiring through supplied adapter cables, so the factory harness stays intact.

Installation still means removing the trim around the old radio, and a frame removal tool is included for that. Many owners do the job themselves, while others prefer a car audio installer. According to the product images, the box contains the head unit with its frame, a power cable, an RCA cable, two USB cables, a microphone, the 1080P rear view camera, a reversing control cable and an instruction manual. AINAVI notes that the cables can differ from one model to the next.

Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto

CarPlay and Android Auto put a simplified version of your phone's maps, music, messages and calls on the car's screen. In the wireless versions, the phone typically pairs over Bluetooth and then sends the picture and sound over Wi-Fi, so there's no cable to plug in each time. AINAVI says this unit connects automatically once it has been set up, and it supports Siri and Google Assistant voice control.

Because the apps run on your phone, they stay current through your phone's own updates rather than the stereo's.

The screen and the system

According to the product images, the touchscreen measures 9 inches and has a resolution of 1280 x 720. It's an IPS panel, a display type known for keeping its colours accurate when viewed from an angle, which helps when the screen sits in the centre of the dash. It is also fully laminated: the glass is bonded to the display with no air gap, which generally reduces internal reflections. AINAVI describes the screen as anti-glare and easy to read in direct sunlight.

The unit runs a Linux system rather than Android, and AINAVI says it starts up quickly when you start the engine. Linux-based head units are typically built around phone projection, so most of what you do on the screen will come from CarPlay or Android Auto.

Calls, radio and steering wheel controls

Bluetooth 5.0 handles hands-free calls and music streaming, using the included microphone. A built-in AM/FM tuner covers local stations, news and traffic reports.

The factory steering wheel controls keep working with the new unit, so you can change the volume, skip tracks and answer calls without reaching for the screen.

The backup camera

The included camera is a 1080P AHD unit with a wide viewing angle and IP68 waterproofing. AHD (analogue high definition) is a camera signal format commonly used in vehicles to carry HD video over a simple cable. When you shift into reverse, the screen switches to the camera view automatically; this relies on the reversing control cable being connected during installation. A camera adds a view behind the car, but it doesn't replace checking mirrors and looking around.

Who it suits

It suits owners of a 2002-2006 Camry who want phone navigation, music and calls on a larger screen without replacing the car. Keeping the factory steering wheel controls and adding a backup camera in the same job makes it a fairly complete upgrade for an older daily driver.

What to check before you buy

  • Your car: confirm the model year, and whether your Camry has a premium factory sound system, which can need different wiring.
  • Your phone: check that it supports wireless CarPlay or wireless Android Auto.
  • Installation: decide whether you'll fit it yourself or use an installer, and allow time to route the camera cable to the rear of the car.
  • Cables: compare the cables in the box with your car's connectors, since they can vary by model.
  • Warranty: AINAVI lists a 12-month warranty and offers technical support for installation questions.
