Acmount D18 Jump Starter with Air Compressor: features, specs and who it suits

A 12V jump starter with a 150 PSI air compressor, USB outputs and an LED light: what the Acmount D18's 6000A peak current and other specs mean for drivers.

The Acmount D18 is a 12V lithium jump starter with a built-in air compressor, so one pack can help start a car with a flat battery and top up a soft tire. It also charges phones and tablets over USB and has an LED light. Here's what its numbers mean and what to check for your vehicle.

What 6000A peak current means

Acmount gives the D18 a peak current of 6,000 amps and says it can start a dead 12V battery in gasoline engines and in diesel engines up to 10 litres, up to 60 times on one charge.

Peak current is the most the pack can deliver for a very brief moment. There's no single agreed way of measuring it across brands, so the engine types and sizes a maker lists are a more practical guide than the headline figure. "Up to" start counts also depend on conditions: a cold engine or a deeply drained battery takes more out of the pack than a start on a mild day.

The 150 PSI compressor

The compressor reaches up to 150 PSI (about 10.3 bar), with an airflow of 45 litres per minute. Acmount says it fills a tire from 0 to 36 PSI in under three minutes, and tops one up from 25 to 36 PSI in one minute; larger tires take longer.

You set the pressure on the LCD display, which reads in PSI, bar or kPa, and the compressor detects the pressure and shuts off automatically when it reaches the setting. There are five inflation modes, for uses ranging from car, SUV, motorcycle and bicycle tires to balls and air cushions. The hose is listed as anti-scalding and high-pressure, and four air nozzles come in the box.

For car tires, the right pressure is the one on the vehicle's placard, usually inside the driver's door or in the owner's manual, rather than the maximum printed on the tire sidewall.

USB power and the LED light

Two USB outputs, with Quick Charge 3.0, charge phones, tablets and other devices. Quick Charge is a fast-charging standard that many Android phones support; other devices charge at their normal speed. The LED light has flashlight, strobe and SOS modes, and an automatic shutdown function helps avoid draining the pack if a button is pressed by accident.

The ten built-in protections

Acmount lists ten built-in protections, including reverse polarity, reverse charge and overvoltage protection. Reverse polarity means the clamps are connected the wrong way round: the positive clamp on the negative terminal, or the other way about. The pack detects the connection automatically, and an indicator light on the smart clamp shows if it's connected incorrectly.

Follow the manual's steps for connecting the clamps and starting the engine, in the order it gives.

Standby, temperature and what's in the box

Acmount says the D18 holds a charge for up to 24 months on standby, supports more than 1,000 recharge cycles, and works from -4°F to 140°F (about -20°C to 60°C), with a dual-core cooling system. Even so, it makes sense to check the charge level now and then, especially before winter or a long trip.

The package includes the jump starter, the air hose, two jump cables, a charging cable, four air nozzles, a woven carrying bag and the manual.

Who it suits

It suits drivers who want a jump starter and tire inflator in one for a car's emergency kit, and anyone who wants a power source and light for camping and travel.

What to check before you buy

  • Your engine: Acmount lists gasoline engines and diesel engines up to 10 litres, on 12V systems.
  • Temperature: the rated range is -4°F to 140°F, and a car parked in strong sun can get hotter than that inside.
  • Charging: a charging cable is included; check which wall or car adapter it needs.
  • Tire pressures: know the recommended pressures for your vehicle and other tires.
  • Size: check that it fits where you plan to keep it in the car.
