The xTool Smoke Purifier (model P5010134) is a floor-standing fume extractor for enclosed laser engravers and cutters. Cutting and engraving materials with a laser produces smoke and odours, and the purifier draws them out of the machine and runs them through a filter. It is designed to be used indoors, with the machine's enclosure.

What it fits

xTool lists the F1 Ultra, M1, M1 Ultra, S1 and P2 laser engravers, and the D1 Pro when used with an enclosure. It says the purifier can also be used with most enclosed laser engraving machines. The machine needs to be enclosed so the fumes can be captured and drawn through, so check that your engraver is enclosed and has a suitable exhaust connection.

How the three-stage filtration works

xTool says the purifier has three stages:

  1. A 25 mm pre-filter, which catches larger particles and dust before they reach the finer filters.
  2. An extended HEPA filter, which captures very fine particles. A true HEPA filter is generally rated to trap 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns.
  3. Activated carbon, which adsorbs odours and gaseous fumes that particle filters alone do not stop.

xTool quotes a 99.97% purification rate. For any claim like this, check the manual for the conditions behind the figure. Filters also wear out and need replacing, and how often depends on what you cut and how much.

Suction and noise

The unit is rated at 150W suction power. xTool says the maximum noise level is 55 dB during laser cutting, which is roughly the level of a quiet conversation. The fan speed is adjusted with a knob, so you can balance airflow against noise for the material you are working with. Some materials produce a lot more smoke than others, so a higher fan speed is typically useful for those.

Sealed design

According to xTool, the body is an integrated design with foam sealing, and the external exhaust port has a metal buckle. Only the air inlet and outlet are left open, so smoke has fewer places to leak out. A well-sealed path matters because any gap lets fumes escape into the room.

Size and moving it

The purifier measures 20.5 x 13.0 x 22.4 inches (about 52 x 33 x 57 cm). It has handles and wheels so you can roll it to where it is needed.

Who it suits

It suits makers, hobbyists and small studios that use an enclosed desktop laser engraver at home or in a workshop and want a way to handle smoke and odour. Anyone working with materials that give off particular fumes should read the material and machine manuals first.

What to check before you buy

  • Compatibility: confirm your engraver's model and exhaust connection are on xTool's fit list or suit the purifier.
  • Ventilation: read the manual on whether you also need to vent outdoors or ensure fresh air in the room.
  • Space: measure the floor space beside your machine and the route for the hose.
  • Filter upkeep: find out the replacement filter type and how to fit it.
  • Noise: 55 dB is a maximum figure, and you may hear it on higher fan speeds.
  • Materials: only cut materials your laser's manufacturer lists as suitable.
