The VEVOR WP90FTR is a drain and sewer inspection camera on a 165 ft (50 m) semi-rigid cable. It comes in an aluminum carry case with a 9-inch monitor and a 512Hz locator receiver, so you can both see inside a pipe and find where a fault sits underground. It is aimed at plumbers, contractors and inspectors, although the same tool suits a property owner dealing with a recurring blockage.

Seeing inside the pipe

The camera head is 0.9 inches across and has a self-leveling function, which keeps the picture upright as the head rolls around bends. That matters because it lets you judge whether an obstruction is at the top, side or bottom of the pipe. The lens is a sapphire IP68 unit, meaning it's built to be dust-tight and waterproof for immersion. Twelve LEDs give steplessly adjustable light, and VEVOR lists a 36x digital zoom and a 145° wide-angle view.

The 9-inch screen shows 1080P images. Buttons on it record HD video or capture still images, stored on the included 32GB SD card, and the footage can be played back on a computer. A sunshade is included to cut glare outdoors.

How the locator works

A built-in transmitter in the camera head sends out a 512Hz signal. The locator receiver picks it up from above ground, so you can trace the head's position along the pipe and mark where a break or blockage lies before you dig. VEVOR notes the cable is marked at 3 ft (0.9 m) intervals, which shows how much has been fed in. Together these help you estimate depth and distance.

One caveat: VEVOR states the battery for the locator receiver is not included and must be bought separately.

The cable

The 165 ft cable is fibreglass and semi-rigid. A semi-rigid cable pushes through long runs and past bends better than a limp one, and it resists the kinks of damp, dark conditions. VEVOR gives the compatible pipe diameters as 0.99 to 5.90 inches (25 to 150 mm) for straight pipes and 1.97 to 5.90 inches (50 to 150 mm) for right-angle bends. Pipes outside those sizes are outside its design range.

Power and portability

The display is powered by a 4500mAh rechargeable lithium battery, which VEVOR says gives 6 to 8 hours of continuous operation. The complete kit weighs about 17 lb (7.7 kg) and measures roughly 22.4 x 16.1 x 7.1 inches (57 x 41 x 18 cm) in its case.

Who it suits

It suits plumbers and drain-clearing businesses, home inspectors, and municipal or maintenance workers. It also suits owners of older properties with root intrusion, bellied pipes or repeated blockages who want to see the problem before hiring excavation. For a very small pipe or a very large main, check the diameter range first.

What to check before you buy

  • Pipe size: compare your pipes with the listed straight and right-angle diameter ranges.
  • Length: 165 ft covers many residential runs, but confirm the distance to your main.
  • Locator battery: buy the receiver's battery separately.
  • Cleaning: wash the cable and head after use, following the manual.
  • Storage space: the case is large, so allow room in a vehicle or workshop.
  • Hygiene: sewer lines carry waste, so use gloves and wash up, as standard practice recommends.
