The VEVOR STB12A is a manual comb binding machine for turning loose pages into bound documents. You punch the holes with a lever, open a plastic comb, slide the pages on and close it. It is meant for schools, offices and small businesses that produce reports, proposals, manuals and handouts.

How comb binding works

Comb binding uses a plastic spine with a row of curved teeth. The machine punches a row of rectangular holes along the paper's edge, a second lever position opens the comb's teeth, and you feed the pages onto them. When the comb is released, the teeth close through the holes. Comb-bound documents lie flat or fold back on themselves, and pages can be added or removed by reopening the comb.

Punching capacity and binding size

VEVOR rates the STB12A to punch 21 holes in up to 12 sheets at a time, so a thick document is punched in several batches. It binds up to 450 sheets in a single comb. The machine takes expandable comb binding from 3/8 inch up to 2 inches, so the same machine covers slim handouts and thick manuals. Larger combs are needed as page counts rise, and the box includes only the smaller size.

Paper sizes and adjustment

The 21-hole pattern suits Letter, A4 and A5 pages, and VEVOR says it handles further sizes too. Adjustable edge guides and side margins let you position the holes so they sit neatly and the text isn't cut. VEVOR describes the operation as pressing the handle lever upward to punch and downward to bind.

Build quality

The base is cast iron with a powder-coated surface, which VEVOR says is robust and rust-resistant. The shell is wear-resistant ABS plastic, and the side arms are metal. The punching blades are carbon steel, intended for durability and precise punching. It measures about 15.2 x 10.8 x 13.6 inches (385 x 274 x 345 mm) and weighs 7.7 lb (3.5 kg), so it is easy to move but steady on a desk.

What's included

The box contains the binding machine, 100 PVC comb strips in 3/8 inch size, one oil-absorbent paper and an instruction manual. The oil-absorbent paper is there because the machine is lubricated at the factory. VEVOR suggests punching it once before first use so the lubricant does not soil your pages.

Day-to-day upkeep

Punch machines generate small paper circles, which collect in a tray. Emptying it regularly helps avoid jams. Check the manual on lubrication and cleaning.

Who it suits

It suits teachers, offices, print shops and home users who bind documents regularly and want a manual machine that needs no power. It is not designed for round-hole wire binding or very high-volume production, where electric punching equipment is more typical.

What to check before you buy

  • Page count: work out the thickest document you will bind, and the comb sizes you need.
  • Paper size: confirm that the 21-hole pattern fits your paper.
  • Punch depth: 12 sheets per pull means thick documents take several passes.
  • Supplies: only 3/8 inch combs come in the box, so check where to get other sizes.
  • Workspace: allow room for a 7.7 lb machine and its waste tray.
