The VEVOR 7"x14" Mini Metal Lathe is a benchtop machine for turning small and medium metal parts: shafts, spacers, pulleys, bushings and threaded pieces. It suits hobby machinists and small workshops that want a compact lathe with a digital speed readout and a set of tooling in the box.
What the 7x14 size means
Lathe sizes describe the largest work they can hold. The first number is the swing over the bed, which VEVOR gives as 7.09 inches (180 mm). It is the biggest diameter that can spin without touching the bed. The second is the distance between centres, listed at 13.78 inches (350 mm), which sets the longest piece you can support between the headstock and the tailstock.
In practice, that places the machine in the small-parts category. It is meant for pieces you could hold in one hand, not for large castings or long bars.
Motor, speed and the digital display
The lathe uses a 550W DC single-phase motor on 110V/60Hz power. Spindle speed is variable from 50 to 2,250 rpm (VEVOR gives a tolerance of 10%), and a digital display shows the speed while you work.
Variable speed matters because the right speed depends on the material and the diameter. Larger diameters and harder metals generally call for slower speeds, while small diameters and softer metals can run faster. Being able to change speed without swapping belts makes it easier to find a good setting.
Chuck, spindle and tailstock
A 4-inch 3-jaw chuck holds round and hexagonal stock, and a 3-jaw design typically centres the work automatically. VEVOR quotes a spindle accuracy of 0.01 mm and a spindle hole of 0.8 inches (21 mm), which lets longer bar stock pass through the headstock. The tailstock has an MT#2 taper, a common standard that fits many centres and drill chucks.
Tool post and threading
A 4-way quick-change tool post holds up to four standard turning tools at once, so you can rotate between roughing and finishing tools without resetting each one. The blade adjusters carry scales to help with feeding.
For threading, the listing gives inch threads from 12 to 52 TPI and metric threads from 0.5 to 2.5 mm. VEVOR says the lathe uses metal gears rather than nylon, which it presents as a durability upgrade, and it includes nine metal gears in the box.
Safety and lighting details
According to VEVOR, the lathe has an automatic power-off protection switch and an LED work lamp for dim workshops. As with any lathe, follow the manual, wear eye protection, avoid loose clothing and long hair near the spindle, and secure the machine to a sturdy bench.
What's in the box and size
VEVOR lists the lathe, working light, lathe centre, oil gun, three chuck jaws, seven turning tools, nine metal gears, six Allen keys, two wrenches, a storage box and an accessories kit. The product measures 30 x 11.8 x 11.4 inches (about 76 x 30 x 29 cm) and weighs 40 kg (88 lb), so it needs a solid bench and some help to move.
What to check before you buy
- Workspace: confirm you have a sturdy bench that can carry about 40 kg plus the work.
- Capacity: check that your typical parts fit within 7.09 inches of swing and 13.78 inches between centres.
- Power: a 110V/60Hz supply is listed; check the outlet and circuit where you will use it.
- Tooling: consider extra tooling, measuring tools and cutting fluid for your materials.
- Upkeep: plan for regular cleaning and oiling, as the manual describes.
- Skills: metal turning has a learning curve; read the manual and learn the basics before you start.
The short version
- A benchtop metal lathe with 7.09 in swing and 13.78 in between centres.
- 550W DC motor, variable speed from 50 to 2,250 rpm and a digital display.
- 4-inch 3-jaw chuck, MT#2 tailstock and 4-way quick-change tool post.
- Inch and metric threading ranges, metal gears and a power-off protection switch.
- Weighs 40 kg, so it needs a sturdy bench.
