VEVOR 160A Stick Welder: dual voltage, Lift TIG and who it suits

The VEVOR 160 Amp stick welder runs on 110V or 220V and adds Lift TIG, Hot Start, Arc Force and anti-stick. What those features mean for a home workshop.

The VEVOR 160 Amp Stick Welder is a compact welding machine that runs on either 110V or 220V household power. It does stick welding, also called arc welding or MMA, and Lift TIG, and it weighs under 12 lb. That makes it a workshop machine that you can also carry to a job.

Dual voltage and output

The welder converts automatically between 110/220V. VEVOR lists the maximum output as 110A on 120V and 180A on 220V. In general, more input voltage means more available current, which allows thicker metal to be welded. On a standard 120V outlet you get less output, which is fine for thinner material and light repairs.

Welders draw a lot of current, so the outlet, breaker and any extension cord matter. Follow the manual and local electrical codes for the supply.

Stick welding and Lift TIG

In stick welding, a coated metal rod (the electrode) carries the arc and melts into the joint. It works outdoors and on rusty or dirty steel, which is why it is common for repairs and fabrication. VEVOR says the welder suits E6010, E6011, E6013, E7014 and E7018 electrodes and works on stainless steel, low-carbon steel and other metals.

Lift TIG is a simplified way to start a TIG arc by touching the tungsten to the work and lifting it, instead of using a high-frequency starter. The listing describes switching between the two modes with a simple switch. TIG welding also normally needs a torch, shielding gas and a regulator, so check what is and isn't in the box.

Hot Start, Arc Force and anti-stick

These three features address the usual early frustrations of stick welding:

  • Hot Start gives a brief boost of current when you strike the arc, helping the rod ignite.
  • Arc Force adjusts current when the arc gets short, which tends to give a smoother arc and deeper penetration.
  • Anti-stick reduces current if the rod freezes to the work, so it is easier to free.

VEVOR says these make the machine more forgiving for beginners. Skill still matters most.

Protection features

The listing mentions VRD (voltage reduction device) electric shock protection, and over-heating, over-current and overload protection. A digital display and intelligent control are listed for arc stability. These are the brand's descriptions; always wear proper welding protection and follow the manual.

Size and portability

The welder measures 16.1 x 10.4 x 13.2 inches (about 41 x 26 x 34 cm) and weighs 11.9 lb (about 5.4 kg). It has an ergonomic carry handle, and VEVOR says it can be used indoors and outdoors, subject to the manual's guidance on weather and ventilation.

Who it suits

It suits hobbyists, farm and home repair work, fence and trailer fixes, and people learning to weld who have a 120V garage but occasionally have access to 220V. It is not aimed at heavy industrial work, where larger machines with higher duty cycles are the norm. The listing doesn't give a duty cycle, so check the manual.

What to check before you buy

  • Power supply: confirm your outlet and breaker match the voltage you plan to use, and what plug or adapter is needed.
  • Metal thickness: match the output (110A or 180A) to the material you weld.
  • What's included: check whether electrodes, cables, ground clamp, a mask and a TIG torch are in the box.
  • Duty cycle: find it in the manual if you weld for long stretches.
  • Safety gear: you'll need a welding helmet, gloves and suitable clothing, plus good ventilation.

The short version

  • A 160 Amp stick welder with Lift TIG, running on 110V or 220V.
  • VEVOR lists maximum output of 110A at 120V and 180A at 220V.
  • Hot Start, Arc Force and anti-stick features aid arc starting.
  • VRD, over-heat, over-current and overload protection.
  • 11.9 lb with a carry handle; read the manual and follow local codes.
