The DEWENWILS HOWL06A is a black outdoor wall sconce with a built-in dusk-to-dawn sensor. It is hardwired to the wall, takes an ordinary E26 bulb that you supply, and turns itself on at nightfall and off in daylight. It is designed for porches, garages, doorways and similar spots where a light should be on at night without anyone touching a switch.

How the photocell works

A photocell is a light-sensitive switch. When the surrounding light drops below a threshold, it closes the circuit; when daylight returns, it opens it. DEWENWILS says the wall light turns on at night and off in the daytime automatically, so there is no need to remember it. The bulb is not included, so install one before the sensor can do its job. Photocells generally work best where they are not exposed to other lights that could keep them from switching.

E26 socket and bulb choice

The socket takes E26 bulbs, the standard medium screw base in North America, up to 60 watts. DEWENWILS lists LED, CFL, incandescent and halogen bulbs as compatible. In practice, an LED bulb rated for outdoor or enclosed fixtures is a common choice because it runs cooler and draws far less power than a 60W equivalent. Check the bulb's packaging for suitability in an enclosed fixture, and stay under the 60W maximum on the fixture.

Materials and shade

The fixture is made of die-cast aluminium with a clear glass shade. DEWENWILS says this build is weather resistant and will not rust or corrode. Aluminium does not rust the way iron does, and a painted or coated finish adds further protection. The bottom is open, which the brand says makes bulb changes easy, without taking the fixture apart.

Installation

This is a hardwired fixture, and DEWENWILS says the hardware needed for direct installation is included. The back plate measures 4.3 x 6 inches (L x H), and the whole fixture measures about 11.8 x 6.7 x 4.8 inches. Make sure the back plate fits your mounting box and wall space. Wiring to household mains should follow local electrical codes and the manual; turn the power off at the breaker first, and use an electrician if you are unsure.

Who it suits

It suits homeowners who want an automatic porch, garage or doorway light with a traditional lantern look in black. It is also an easy upgrade for anyone replacing an older fixture that needs a manual switch.

What to check before you buy

  • Mounting: compare the 4.3 x 6 inch back plate with your electrical box and wall space.
  • Size: the fixture is about 11.8 inches tall; check the clearance by a door or beside a garage.
  • Bulb: buy an E26 bulb of 60W or less, suitable for an enclosed outdoor fixture.
  • Photocell position: avoid sites where other lighting will shine on the sensor.
  • Wiring: confirm you have a suitable wired location and follow local codes.
  • Finish and upkeep: wipe the glass occasionally and check the manual for cleaning advice.
