The DEWENWILS digital timer box switches heavy electrical loads on and off on a schedule you set. It is aimed at pool pumps, but the brand also lists heaters, filters and other motor-driven equipment. Instead of walking out to a switch every day, you program the times once and the box repeats them.
What the 40A and 2HP figures mean
The listing gives the timer a limit of 40 amps and 2 horsepower, for 120, 240 or 277 volts AC. Those figures describe the largest load the switch inside is built to carry. Pool pumps and similar motors draw a surge of current when they start, which is why timers for them are rated well above a small household plug-in timer. DEWENWILS says the box can control up to two units at once. Always compare the nameplate of your own equipment with these figures, including the voltage.
Schedules and modes
The brand says you can set up to 20 on/off schedules. They can repeat on a seven-day cycle, or you can set a single-day pattern. That allows, for example, a pump run in the morning and again in the evening, with a different pattern at weekends.
There are five modes, chosen with the MODE button: always on, always off, automatic on/off, and a daylight saving time option. Always-on and always-off are handy for a manual override, such as running the pump for a while after heavy use, without wiping your programme.
Battery backup for the settings
A backup battery is included, and DEWENWILS says it keeps the settings for about three months if the power goes out. In practice that means a brief outage should not leave you re-entering the whole weekly schedule. Check the clock after any long outage, and expect to replace the battery eventually, as with any clock battery.
Built for the outdoors
The housing is waterproof resin (PC) with flame-retardant insulation, and the brand says it resists UV light and high temperatures. Two water outlet holes are meant to keep water out of the junction box. The listed operating range is -40°F to 140°F (-40°C to 60°C), so DEWENWILS says it can stay outside in poor weather.
Wiring and installation
The timer module is removable, which makes it easier to wire the box on a wall and then fit the module. There are wiring openings in two sizes, 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch, to suit common conduit and cable fittings, and wire caps are included. The box measures about 9.1 x 4.7 x 6.7 inches (23 x 12 x 17 cm).
Wiring a pump circuit is electrical work. Follow the manual and your local electrical code, turn the power off at the breaker first, and use a qualified electrician if you are not sure.
Who it suits
It suits owners of pools, spas and ponds who want a fixed daily routine for a pump or filter. It could also serve a fountain, a water feature or other fixed equipment that should run at set hours. People who want app or voice control would need a different, smart timer; this one is operated on the box itself.
What to check before you buy
- Voltage and load: confirm your equipment's voltage, amperage and horsepower fit within 40A, 2HP and the 120-277V range.
- Wiring type: check whether your pump is wired for 120V or 240V, and read the wiring diagram for that case.
- Mounting spot: the box is fairly large, so plan wall space and conduit entry.
- Local rules: some areas require a licensed electrician for pool equipment.
- Battery: note that the backup battery will need replacing over time.
- What's in the box: the timer, battery and wire caps are listed; mounting hardware and conduit are not mentioned.
