The WD Red SN700 is an NVMe solid-state drive that Western Digital designed for network-attached storage (NAS) devices. This version offers 2TB in the compact M.2 2280 format. It is intended for NAS boxes that have M.2 slots, where such a drive can handle caching or serve as fast storage.

Why a NAS-specific SSD

A NAS runs around the clock and serves several people or programs at once. That is different from a laptop, where a drive is idle much of the time. Western Digital describes the SN700 as engineered for 24/7, always-on environments, with reliability and endurance suited to NAS workloads. It also says the drive has been purpose-built and tested for compatibility with popular NAS systems.

Gen3 PCIe and the 3,400 MB/s figure

The drive uses an NVMe connection over PCIe Gen3, and Western Digital rates it at up to 3,400 MB/s. That is the best-case sequential speed. On a NAS the network is usually the limit: a typical gigabit link carries about 110 MB/s, and even 10-gigabit Ethernet tops out near 1,000 MB/s. The drive's speed matters most for caching, where the NAS reads and writes to the SSD internally, and for random access with many users.

Caching and demanding tasks

Western Digital's pitch is "fast-caching". A cache stores frequently used data on faster storage in front of slower hard disks, so repeat reads come back sooner. The company lists virtualization, collaborative editing and database storage among the jobs the drive suits, and mentions multi-user, multitasking applications.

Capacity and format

The SN700 range scales to 4TB, and this listing is the 2TB model, model number WDS200T1R0C. Capacity is counted as 1GB = 1 billion bytes, so the space shown by an operating system is somewhat lower. The M.2 2280 stick measures about 3.1 x 0.9 inches (80 x 22 mm) and is very light.

Who it suits

It suits owners of a NAS with M.2 slots who want to add SSD caching or a fast storage volume, small businesses sharing files or running a few virtual machines, and home labs with demanding workloads.

What to check before you buy

  • M.2 slots: confirm that your NAS has them, that they take 2280 NVMe drives, and which slots support caching.
  • Compatibility list: look at your NAS maker's list of approved drives for your exact model.
  • PCIe speed: some NAS slots run at slower PCIe speeds or fewer lanes than the drive can use.
  • Use case: decide between caching and a storage pool, as the software settings and wear differ.
  • Capacity: pick a size with room for your cache or data.
  • Backups: an SSD in a NAS does not replace backups; plan a copy elsewhere.

The short version

  • A 2TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD from Western Digital's WD Red line, made for NAS devices.
  • PCIe Gen3 interface, rated up to 3,400 MB/s.
  • Described as built for 24/7 use, multi-user work, virtualization and caching.
  • Tested for compatibility with popular NAS systems, according to Western Digital.
  • Check your NAS for M.2 slots and approved drives first.
