The WD Purple Pro 8TB (WD8002PURP) is an internal 3.5-inch hard drive designed for security recording systems. Unlike a typical desktop drive, it is built for devices that write video around the clock, such as network video recorders (NVRs) and systems that also run video analytics. It connects over SATA 6Gb/s and has a 256MB cache.
Why a surveillance drive differs
A security recorder writes data constantly, often from many cameras at once. A desktop drive is designed for bursts of use with idle gaps. Surveillance drives are typically tuned for continuous writing, and for streams from many cameras. Western Digital describes the Purple Pro as delivering reliability and performance for the most demanding video recording and analytics environments, and as enterprise-class.
Workload limit
The drive is rated for 550TB per year. Western Digital defines workload as the amount of user data transferred to or from the drive. This matters for systems that do more than record, such as ones that also read the footage back for AI-assisted analytics. A higher workload limit gives more headroom for that.
Reliability figures
Western Digital quotes up to 2.5 million hours Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF). MTBF is a statistical estimate across a large group of drives, not a prediction for any single drive, so it is best used for comparing designs rather than to expect a drive will run for that long. The drive carries a 5-year limited warranty; the brand points to its website for terms.
Capacity and cache
This listing is the 8TB model, though the brand says the range goes up to 24TB. The capacity figure uses 1TB as one trillion bytes, so usable space shows slightly lower. Many cameras at high resolution fill drives quickly, so storage size, camera count and how many days of footage you keep all feed into the capacity you need. The 256MB cache is a buffer that smooths the data flow.
Size and fit
The drive uses the standard 3.5-inch form factor (about 5.8 x 4.2 x 1.1 inches, or roughly 147 x 107 x 28 mm). It needs a 3.5-inch bay and both SATA data and power connections.
Who it suits
It suits owners of home and business camera systems with an NVR or a PC-based recorder that need a drive for constant video writing. It is not aimed at laptops, game consoles or general file storage.
What to check before you buy
- Recorder compatibility: look at your NVR's manual for supported drive types and the largest capacity it accepts.
- Bay and connections: confirm a free 3.5-inch bay and SATA connections.
- Capacity planning: estimate daily recording volume from camera count, resolution and compression.
- Warranty: read the terms on Western Digital's website.
- Noise and heat: hard drives make some noise and warmth, so consider where the recorder sits and its airflow.
