The VEVOR ST-5000VA is a 5000W transformer that converts mains power between 110 volts and 220 volts, in either direction. It is meant for people who own appliances made for one voltage standard but live or travel where the other is used, such as North American equipment in Europe or the reverse. This page explains what the specifications mean and what to confirm first.

Step-up and step-down in one unit

A transformer changes voltage using two coils of wire wound around a core. VEVOR's unit is switched by an input voltage selector: set it for 110V to step up to 220V, or for 220V to step down to 110V. The listing stresses setting the switch correctly before powering on, and that is worth following to the letter, because the wrong setting can feed the wrong voltage to your device.

A transformer changes voltage only. It does not change frequency, so a 60 Hz appliance used on a 50 Hz supply is still running at 50 Hz. Check that your device's label allows for this, particularly for motors, clocks and timers.

Outlets and ports

According to VEVOR, the unit has six AC outlets: three US NEMA 5-15R outlets and three European Schuko outlets. There is also a 5V USB port and a Type-C jack. A universal wiring slot lets you fit a separate power cord for the wall sockets in your country, so the cord is bought separately.

What 5000W means in practice

The 5000W figure is the unit's maximum rated load. VEVOR advises choosing a converter whose power figure is at least 25% higher than the combined power of the devices you plan to run. In practice, add up the wattage printed on each appliance, then multiply by 1.25. Appliances with motors or compressors, such as fridges and power tools, can briefly draw several times their running power when they start, so they deserve extra margin.

Two LED displays show the output voltage in real time, which helps you see whether the unit is delivering what you expect and avoid overloading it.

Protection and certification

VEVOR lists CE and FCC certification, and says the unit has internal overload, overcurrent and short-circuit protection. These are the listed features. As with any mains-powered equipment, follow local electrical codes and the manual, and don't use it in wet conditions.

Toroidal coil design

The transformer uses toroidal (doughnut-shaped) coils. Compared with traditional laminated-core designs, toroidal coils typically hum less, run with less stray magnetic field and weigh less. VEVOR says this supports continuous 24/7 operation and quieter running.

Size and weight

VEVOR gives the size as 10.6 x 9.5 x 8.5 inches (270 x 240 x 215 mm) and the net weight as 28.2 lb (12.8 kg). There is a carrying handle. It's compact for its power, but it's still a heavy item to move often.

Who it suits

It suits expatriates, people who have imported appliances, and workshops or households using equipment made for another region. It is less convenient for a single small device, where a smaller converter would do.

What to check before you buy

  • Device labels: confirm each device's voltage, frequency and wattage.
  • Frequency: remember that a transformer does not convert 50 Hz to 60 Hz.
  • Total load: add up the devices you will run together and allow the 25% margin VEVOR suggests.
  • Plug types: check that the outlets match your plugs, and whether you need the separate input power cord.
  • Space and ventilation: leave room around the unit as described in the manual.
  • Heating appliances: hair dryers and kettles draw a lot of power, so check their wattage carefully.

The short version

  • A 5000W transformer that steps 110V up to 220V or 220V down to 110V.
  • Three US outlets, three Schuko outlets, a 5V USB port and a Type-C jack.
  • Two LED displays for output voltage; overload, overcurrent and short-circuit protection.
  • CE and FCC certified, with a toroidal coil design.
  • 28.2 lb (12.8 kg) with a carrying handle; the input power cord is bought separately.
