The Veise VE017G-H is a keypad smart deadbolt sold with a matching handle set in matte black and a plug-in Wi-Fi gateway. It replaces a standard deadbolt and entry handle, and lets you unlock with a fingerprint, a code, a card, your phone or your voice. Here is what its features mean, and what to check about your door before you install one.

Eight ways to unlock

Veise lists eight ways in: fingerprint, app, keypad codes, cards, voice, a backup key, user authorization and code sharing. The fingerprint reader uses a self-learning chip, and Veise lists recognition in 0.2 seconds; the app manages more than 20 fingerprints. The keyed cylinder means a standard key still works if you need it.

How the gateway and app work

The plug-in gateway connects the lock to your home Wi-Fi. Veise shows it on a 2.4 GHz network, plugged into an outlet within about 16 feet (5 m) of the lock, so plan where it will go before you install. Veise also says the gateway can bring up to two other locks from its VE01 series online.

In the KK Home app you can lock and unlock remotely, check whether the door is locked, get real-time notifications, manage users, and see an activity log of who came and went.

Codes for family, guests and rentals

You can set more than 100 custom codes, permanent, timed (duration) or recurring, plus unlimited one-time codes, and delete, change or share them from your phone. Timed and recurring codes are handy for regular visitors such as a cleaner or dog walker, and for short-term rentals, where each guest can get a code that stops working after the stay.

Anti-peeping codes let you type random digits around your real code, so someone watching the keypad can't easily pick it up.

Auto-lock, voice control and power

An auto-lock timer, adjustable from 0 to 180 seconds, locks the door again on its own after it has been opened. The lock works with Alexa and Google voice assistants.

It runs on four AA batteries, which are not included, and Veise lists battery life of up to 300 days or more; real battery life depends on how often the door is used and how much you use Wi-Fi features. An emergency power port lets you power the lock from outside if the batteries run flat. Check the manual for the connector type, and keep a spare key somewhere you can reach.

Build and listed standards

The deadbolt is made of aluminum and zinc alloy, and Veise lists it as tested to ANSI/BHMA Grade 3. The ANSI/BHMA standards grade locks from 1 to 3, with Grade 1 the most demanding; Grade 3 is the basic residential grade. As with any lock, how well it is installed and how solid the door and frame are matter as much as the lock itself.

Installation and fit

Veise says installation takes about 15 minutes with a screwdriver, with no locksmith needed, on most standard US left- or right-handed doors 1-3/8 to 2 inches (35 to 50 mm) thick. Its fit guide shows a 2-1/8-inch (54 mm) door hole and a backset of 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches (60 or 70 mm). Mortise and integrated locks are not compatible, and the lock's thickness may get in the way of a screen or storm door. Follow the manual when you install it.

Who it suits

It suits busy households sharing a front door, families who want alerts when someone comes home, and owners of rental properties who manage guest codes remotely. Veise includes a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register the product, and US phone and email support.

What to check before you buy

  • Door size: confirm your door's thickness, hole size and backset match the fit guide.
  • Lock type: check that your door doesn't use a mortise or integrated lock.
  • Storm door: check for clearance if a screen or storm door closes over the lock.
  • Wi-Fi: you need a 2.4 GHz network and an outlet within about 16 feet of the lock for the gateway.
  • Renting: if you rent, check whether you may replace the lock.
