The TEAMGROUP T-Force M200 is a pocket-sized external solid-state drive with 2TB of storage. It connects over USB-C using the USB 3.2 Gen2x2 standard, and TEAMGROUP says it can read and write at up to 2000 MB/s. It is for people who want to carry large files, game libraries or backups between devices.

What USB 3.2 Gen2x2 means

USB naming is confusing, so it helps to break it down. USB 3.2 Gen1 runs at 5Gb/s, Gen2 at 10Gb/s, and Gen2x2 at 20Gb/s by using two lanes. TEAMGROUP says the M200's 2000 MB/s is four times faster than Gen1. To reach that speed, both the drive and the port or cable on your computer must support Gen2x2. Many ports are Gen1 or Gen2, and on those the drive still works but runs slower, limited by the port.

Size and build

The drive weighs only 83 g (about 3 oz) and measures roughly 4.1 x 2.2 x 0.4 inches, so it slips into a pocket or bag. TEAMGROUP describes a dual structure for cooling, since fast drives get warm during long transfers, and a drop resistance of 2 metres. Drop figures come from the brand's own tests, so treat them as a guide rather than a guarantee.

Compatibility

The listing says the drive works with Windows 10 and 8.1, macOS X 10.11 or later, Linux 2.6 or later and Chrome OS. For consoles, TEAMGROUP lists PlayStation 4 with system software 4.50 or higher, PlayStation 5 for playing and storing PS4 games and archiving PS5 games, and Xbox. That last point is worth reading carefully: on PlayStation 5, an external drive of this type is generally for archiving PS5 titles rather than running them directly.

Warranty and support

TEAMGROUP gives a five-year limited warranty and free technical support through its website. It notes that the definition and conditions of TBW (terabytes written, an endurance measure) follow the JEDEC standard.

Who it suits

It suits creators who move video or photo files between machines, gamers who want to expand console or PC storage, and anyone who wants a fast backup drive. It's compact, but at 2TB it can hold a lot, from game libraries to project files.

What to check before you buy

  • Look at the USB ports on your computer or console. A USB-C Gen2x2 port is needed for full speed; ask the manufacturer or check the manual if the port is unlabelled.
  • Use the cable that suits the port, and confirm that it supports the same speed.
  • Check the compatibility notes for your operating system or console version.
  • Decide how you'll format it, as different systems prefer different file systems such as exFAT, NTFS or APFS.
  • Keep in mind that sustained writes can slow down once the drive warms up or its cache fills.
  • Remember that usable space shows as less than 2TB.
