TEAMGROUP MP44L 2TB NVMe SSD: features, specs and who it suits

The TEAMGROUP MP44L is a 2TB PCIe Gen 4x4 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD rated up to 4,800/4,400MB/s with a graphene label. What the specs mean and what to check.

The TEAMGROUP MP44L is a 2TB solid-state drive in the M.2 2280 format, using the NVMe 1.4 protocol over a PCIe Gen 4 x4 connection. It is designed as a fast internal drive for desktops and laptops, for the operating system, games, large projects and working files. TEAMGROUP's model number is TM8FPK002T0C101.

What PCIe Gen 4 x4 means for speed

TEAMGROUP rates the drive at sequential read and write speeds of up to 4,800MB/s and 4,400MB/s. These are the brand's maximum figures, measured under ideal conditions, so real-world results depend on the workload, the rest of the system and how full the drive is. TEAMGROUP says this is more than double the performance of the PCIe Gen 3 interface. A Gen 4 x4 link has roughly twice the bandwidth of Gen 3 x4, which is what gives drives like this room to go faster than older NVMe models. Everyday tasks such as booting and opening apps may feel similar across fast drives, while the difference shows most in large file transfers, video editing and loading big game levels.

The graphene-coated label and heat

Heat is a common limit on fast NVMe drives, because they may slow themselves down to protect the hardware when they get hot. TEAMGROUP says the MP44L is the first of its products to use a conductive graphene coating on aluminum foil for the label. The label is less than 1mm thick, which the brand says avoids mechanical interference when you install it. Combined with an onboard M.2 heat sink, TEAMGROUP says heat dissipation is doubled. That is the brand's claim, but the idea is simple: a thin label that helps spread heat, and which fits under a motherboard heatsink without crowding it.

M.2 2280 and platform support

The "2280" in M.2 2280 means the drive is 22mm wide and 80mm long. This is the most common size for desktop motherboards and many laptops. TEAMGROUP states that the drive supports the latest Intel and AMD platforms, in both desktops and notebooks. Because the drive is a standard M.2 stick, it is also well suited to systems that need a single-sided, thin module, although you should check your device's manual.

SLC caching

The drive supports SLC caching, a technique where part of the flash is temporarily written in a faster mode, so short bursts of writes finish quickly. When a very large file fills the cache, speeds usually drop to the drive's native flash speed. For most everyday use, and for moderate-sized transfers, the cache keeps the drive feeling quick.

Warranty and support

The listing gives a five-year or TBW (terabytes written) limited warranty, whichever comes first, along with free technical support and customer service through TEAMGROUP's official website. TBW is a measure of the total amount of data that can be written to the drive over its life.

Who it suits

The MP44L suits people upgrading from a SATA drive or an older NVMe drive, builders putting together a Gen 4 system, and laptop owners whose machine has a free M.2 2280 slot that supports PCIe Gen 4. It works for gamers, creators who handle large media files and anyone who wants 2TB in a single small module.

What to check before you buy

  • Slot type: confirm that your motherboard or laptop has an M.2 2280 slot that supports NVMe, not only SATA.
  • PCIe generation: a Gen 3 slot will still run the drive, but at lower speeds than the rated figures.
  • Space and cooling: check the clearance for the drive and any heatsink in your device.
  • Backups: copy data from your old drive before cloning or replacing it.
  • Warranty terms: read the TBW limits on TEAMGROUP's site.

The short version

  • A 2TB M.2 2280 NVMe 1.4 SSD with a PCIe Gen 4x4 interface.
  • Rated by TEAMGROUP at up to 4,800MB/s read and 4,400MB/s write.
  • Graphene-coated aluminum foil label under 1mm thick, designed to work with a heat sink.
  • SLC caching, and a five-year or TBW limited warranty.
  • For desktops and laptops with a compatible M.2 slot.
