The Silicon Power XS70 is an M.2 NVMe solid state drive with a heatsink already attached. This 2TB version (model SP02KGBP44XS7005) is sold for PlayStation 5 storage expansion, and it also uses the standard M.2 2280 format found in many PCs. The built-in heatsink saves you from buying and fitting a separate one.
What PCIe Gen4 and NVMe 1.4 mean
The drive uses a PCIe Gen 4 x4 interface. Each Gen4 lane carries roughly twice the data of a Gen3 lane, and four lanes together are what lets the best SSDs reach several gigabytes per second. Silicon Power rates the XS70 at up to 7,300 MB/s reads and up to 6,800 MB/s writes. Those are the brand's peak figures for sequential transfers, and everyday results depend on the file sizes, the host system and temperature.
NVMe 1.4 is the protocol the drive uses to talk to the system. Silicon Power says it supports lower latency and lower power consumption than older standards. The drive also has a DRAM cache buffer, which typically helps keep random reads and writes responsive, and it uses 3D NAND flash.
The heatsink design
Fast SSDs get warm under sustained load, and many slow themselves down when they overheat. Silicon Power describes the XS70's heatsink as inspired by shark gills, with angled slits to let heat escape. The brand says this helps maintain performance during long sessions. In a PS5, the heatsink matters because the console's M.2 bay has limited space, so check the clearance requirements in Sony's current guidance before buying.
Data integrity and endurance
The listing states support for RAID and LDPC coding, an error-correction method that helps maintain data integrity. Endurance is rated at 1,400 TBW (terabytes written), which is the total amount of data the drive is expected to handle over its life. The warranty is five years, or until the TBW figure is reached, whichever comes first, as the brand's policy describes.
Size and capacity
The drive is M.2 2280, meaning 22 mm wide and 80 mm long, and with the heatsink it measures about 3.1 x 1.0 x 0.4 inches (roughly 79 x 25 x 10 mm) and weighs 0.1 lb. Silicon Power says the XS70 line goes up to 4TB, and this listing is the 2TB model.
Who it suits
It is aimed at gamers adding fast storage to a PS5 or a PC with a free Gen4 M.2 slot, and at anyone who wants a drive with cooling included.
What to check before you buy
- Confirm your console or motherboard supports M.2 2280 NVMe drives and PCIe Gen4 speeds.
- Measure the clearance above the slot. A drive with a heatsink is taller than a bare one.
- On a PC, check whether the motherboard already has its own M.2 heatsink, which may not fit over this one.
- Check the console maker's list of requirements for the speed and heatsink height.
- Back up important files before installing or formatting a drive.
