The Seagate SkyHawk AI 12TB is a 3.5-inch internal hard drive designed for security recording systems, particularly network video recorders (NVRs) that also run AI analytics such as object detection. It is a storage part rather than a finished product, so this page explains what it is for and what its figures mean.
Why surveillance drives are different
A recorder writes video constantly, all day and every day, often from many cameras at once. Ordinary desktop drives are built for short bursts of activity, while surveillance drives are tuned for steady writing. Seagate says the SkyHawk AI is built for AI-enabled 24×7 systems, where the recorder also reads video back for analysis while still recording.
Capacity and interface
The drive stores 12TB and connects over SATA 6Gb/s with a 256MB cache. The form factor is 3.5 inches, which suits NVRs, DVRs, servers and desktop-style enclosures with standard bays. Seagate says it supports over 10,000 hours of video and analytics. How many days of footage that gives you depends on the number of cameras, resolution, frame rate and compression.
Stream support
Seagate says the drive supports up to 64 HD video streams and 32 AI streams, and it lists "ImagePerfect AI", which it describes as delivering zero dropped frames under heavier workloads. Those figures describe what the drive can handle. The real limit in a system also depends on the recorder's own hardware.
Reliability and workload figures
Two numbers are worth understanding:
- 550TB per year workload rate. Seagate states this is more than three times that of standard surveillance drives. It is a measure of how much data can be read and written in a year.
- 2 million hours MTBF. Mean time between failures is a statistical estimate across many drives, not a promise for a single drive's life.
Health management and rescue services
SkyHawk Health Management is Seagate's term for monitoring and prevention tools, with options for intervention and recovery. It also includes RAID RapidRebuild, which Seagate says rebuilds volumes three times faster than traditional RAID rebuilds, which matters when a drive in an array has to be replaced. This works only in compatible recorders and arrays.
The drive comes with a five-year limited warranty and three years of in-house Rescue Data Recovery Services, according to Seagate. Read the terms for what is covered.
Size and weight
It measures about 5.8 x 4.0 x 1.0 inches and weighs about 1.4 lb (roughly 0.64 kg).
Who it suits
It suits home and business owners building or upgrading an NVR or AI-capable recorder, and installers specifying storage for multi-camera systems. It is less suited to ordinary desktop storage or anyone wanting a fast boot drive, since a hard drive is slower than an SSD.
What to check before you buy
- Recorder compatibility: confirm your NVR or DVR supports 12TB drives and this model.
- Bay type: 3.5-inch SATA, with a power and data connection available.
- Storage maths: estimate how many days of footage you need from your camera count and bitrate.
- Cooling and noise: hard drives spin and produce some noise and heat, especially in a closed enclosure.
- Backup plan: a single drive is not a backup, and important footage should be exported.
The short version
- A 12TB, 3.5-inch SATA 6Gb/s surveillance hard drive with 256MB cache.
- Built for AI-enabled recorders, with up to 64 HD and 32 AI streams, according to Seagate.
- Rated at 550TB per year workload and 2 million hours MTBF.
- Includes RAID RapidRebuild, a five-year limited warranty and three years of rescue data recovery.
- Check that your recorder supports the capacity.
