Seagate IronWolf Pro 12TB NAS Hard Drive: features, specs and who it suits

A 12TB 3.5-inch CMR SATA hard drive built for multi-bay NAS and RAID, with 7,200 RPM, 256 MB cache and a five-year warranty. What the specs mean.

The Seagate IronWolf Pro 12TB (model ST12000NT001) is a 3.5-inch internal hard drive made for network attached storage. A NAS is a small always-on box that holds several drives and shares files across your network, and drives in it have different demands from the single disk in a desktop. Seagate designs the IronWolf Pro line for multi-bay, multi-user commercial and enterprise RAID systems.

What CMR means

The drive uses conventional magnetic recording, or CMR. In CMR, data tracks are written side by side without overlapping, so a drive can overwrite data in place at a steady speed. The alternative, shingled recording (SMR), overlaps tracks and can slow down badly when it has to rewrite large areas, which is a known problem in RAID arrays that rebuild. Seagate says its all-CMR approach gives consistent 24x7 performance.

The drive spins at 7,200 RPM with a 256 MB cache and uses the SATA 6 Gb/s interface. Faster rotation generally means quicker access times than the 5,400 RPM drives often found in lower-power storage. The trade-off for a faster drive is typically more noise, heat and power use, which matters in a quiet room or a small enclosure.

Built for NAS and RAID

Seagate lists several features aimed at multi-bay systems:

  • AgileArray firmware with dual-plane balancing to keep performance steady in RAID.
  • TLER (time-limited error recovery), which limits how long the drive tries to fix a read error so a RAID controller does not drop it from the array.
  • Rotational vibration (RV) sensors, which help the drive cope with the vibration from neighbouring drives in a crowded enclosure.
  • IronWolf Health Management, which the brand says offers prevention, intervention and recovery recommendations. It works with compatible NAS software.

Workload and reliability figures

Seagate rates the drive for up to 550 TB per year of workload and quotes an MTBF of 2.5 million hours. MTBF is a statistical estimate across many drives, not a prediction for a single one. A five-year limited warranty applies, and the listing adds a complimentary three-year Rescue Data Recovery Service.

Size and fit

The listing gives dimensions of 5.8 x 4.0 x 1.0 inches (roughly 147 x 102 x 25 mm) and a weight of 1.7 lb (about 0.8 kg), the standard 3.5-inch size used in NAS bays and desktop cases.

What to check before you buy

  • Enclosure support. Check that your NAS lists this drive or capacity as supported, and confirm its bay count.
  • RAID plan. RAID is not a backup. Keep a separate copy of important files.
  • Noise and heat. A 7,200 RPM drive can be louder and warmer than slower ones; check ventilation.
  • Cables and trays. The listing does not mention cables or mounting hardware.
  • Matching drives. Arrays usually work best with drives of the same size and model.
  • Software features. Health management and recovery services depend on compatible software and registration.

The short version

  • A 12TB 3.5-inch CMR hard drive for NAS and RAID use.
  • 7,200 RPM, 256 MB cache and SATA 6 Gb/s.
  • Rated for up to 550 TB/year, 2.5 million hours MTBF.
  • Five-year limited warranty plus three-year data recovery service, per Seagate.
  • Suited to multi-bay storage systems rather than a single-disk desktop.
