The Seagate FireCuda 520N is a small internal NVMe SSD in the M.2 2230 format, built for devices with limited space. Seagate says it brings more storage and faster loading to handheld gaming devices, Microsoft Surface models and laptops that use this size.

What M.2 2230 means

M.2 drives are named by their size. The "22" is the width in millimetres and "30" the length, so a 2230 drive is 22 x 30 mm, noticeably shorter than the common 2280 size (80 mm long). The 520N measures about 2.0 x 0.9 inches and is very thin. Because a 2230 drive is physically short, it fits devices whose slot only takes that size. A longer drive will not fit these slots, so check which size your device uses.

PCIe Gen4 x4 and NVMe 1.4

The drive uses a PCIe Gen4 x4 connection and the NVMe 1.4 protocol. NVMe is built for flash storage and is much quicker than the older SATA interface. Seagate lists speeds up to 5000MB/s for the 2 TB model (4750MB/s for the 1 TB version). The figures are maximums, and a device that supports only an older PCIe generation will run the drive slower.

Why it suits handhelds

Seagate names the Steam Deck, Microsoft Surface and laptops. These devices tend to have small bodies with a single, short M.2 slot, so a drive in this size is the way to add storage. Seagate says the result is the loading speed of a desktop in a handheld. Keep in mind that the rest of the device sets the experience too.

Capacity

The 2 TB version provides plenty of room for large game libraries. The range also includes a 1 TB option.

Protection and warranty

The drive includes Seagate's three-year Rescue Data Recovery Services and a five-year limited warranty. Rescue is a service that tries to recover data if a drive fails under certain conditions, and Seagate sets the terms. Read the details before relying on it, and keep separate backups of important files.

Fitting it

Opening a device to swap a drive varies widely. Some handhelds and laptops make it simple, while others need careful disassembly and may affect the manufacturer's warranty. Follow your device maker's instructions.

Who it suits

It suits owners of devices with an M.2 2230 slot who want to replace or enlarge their storage. It's not intended for desktops that only have longer 2280 slots.

What to check before you buy

  • Slot size: make sure your device takes M.2 2230.
  • Interface: check which PCIe generation and NVMe support the slot offers.
  • Heat: small devices have little room for cooling, so check what your maker recommends.
  • Installation: read the manual, since swapping the drive may need tools and care.
  • Data: back up and plan how you will move your files to a new drive.
