The Seagate Exos ST26000NM000C is a 26TB internal hard drive in the 3.5-inch format, sold here as a recertified (renewed) unit. It uses a SATA 6Gb/s connection, spins at 7200 RPM and has a 512MB cache. Exos is Seagate's enterprise drive line, built for servers, network storage and data centres where very large amounts of data need to be kept on disk.
What recertified means here
The listing says these drives are data sanitized, tested and include all firmware and parts, like all Seagate factory recertified devices. In other words, a drive that has been used before has been wiped, checked and returned to a working state by the manufacturer's process. Recertified drives can differ from new ones in their history and in the warranty terms, so read the warranty on offer before you rely on one for important data. This listing does not give a warranty length.
What the specs mean
26TB capacity. Seagate describes the Exos range as its highest-capacity drives, aimed at getting more petabytes into each rack. For a home or small business user, 26TB in one bay is a lot of room for backups, media libraries, archives and surveillance footage.
CMR recording. CMR stands for conventional magnetic recording, in which tracks on the platter do not overlap. It is typically preferred for storage systems that write data often or rebuild arrays, because it avoids the slowdowns that can come with shingled recording (SMR).
7200 RPM and 512MB cache. Faster rotation generally means quicker access to data, and the large cache helps smooth out reads and writes. Seagate says this hyperscale SATA model is tuned for large data transfers and low latency.
2.5M hours MTBF. The listing gives a mean time between failures of 2.5 million hours. This is a statistical estimate across many drives under rated conditions, not a promise about any single drive's lifespan.
SATA 6Gb/s. The connection works with the standard SATA ports found on most desktops, NAS units and servers.
Where it fits
Seagate positions the drive for cloud and large-scale data centre applications, but the same traits suit people building a home server or a network-attached storage (NAS) box. It works well as bulk storage in a RAID or parity-protected pool, or as a large backup target. It is a spinning drive, so it is not as fast to open programs as an SSD and works best for capacity rather than for the operating system.
What to check before you buy
- Bay and connection: confirm your NAS, server or PC takes a 3.5-inch SATA drive.
- Compatibility: some NAS units and RAID cards publish lists of supported drives or maximum capacities; 26TB may exceed the limit on older models.
- Noise and heat: enterprise drives can be louder and run warmer than desktop drives, so check your enclosure's cooling and where it sits.
- Power: check the power supply's capacity, especially when starting several drives together.
- Warranty: confirm the terms for a recertified drive before you buy.
- Backups: one drive is not a backup; keep a second copy of anything important.
