The Seagate Storage Expansion Card, model STJR1000400, adds 1TB of extra solid state storage to an Xbox Series X or Series S. The built-in drive on those consoles fills up quickly with modern games, and this officially licensed card slots into a dedicated port on the back so that more games can stay installed.

Why a special card is needed

Xbox Series X|S consoles use a storage design called the Xbox Velocity Architecture. Seagate says the card was designed in partnership with Xbox to work with it. That is the key difference from a typical external USB drive: games built for the Series X|S generally need to run from the console's internal SSD or from a matching expansion card, while an ordinary external drive is usually limited to storing them or running older titles.

Same performance as the internal drive

According to Seagate, every game that plays from the expansion card plays at the same peak levels as the console's internal SSD, without sacrificing graphics, latency, load times or frame rates. That includes thousands of Original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games. Seagate adds that the card helps deliver faster load times and richer environments through the Velocity Architecture.

Quick Resume

Quick Resume lets you switch between several games in seconds and pick up where you left off. Seagate states that this works from the internal SSD and from the expansion card alike, so a game kept on the card does not lose the feature.

Physical design and setup

The card measures about 3.1 x 0.9 x 0.4 inches and is very light. It pushes into the console's storage expansion slot at the rear, which the console's manual describes. The console then formats the card, and you can choose where new games install and move existing ones between the internal drive and the card.

Warranty

The card includes a 3-year limited warranty, which Seagate presents as long-term peace of mind. Read the warranty terms for what is covered.

Who it suits

It suits owners of an Xbox Series X or Series S who are running short on space and want a larger library installed at once, including players who keep many big titles and prefer not to delete and re-download them.

What to check before you buy

  • Console: the card is designed for Xbox Series X|S. Check that it is not intended for an Xbox One or another system.
  • Capacity: this model is 1TB. Formatting and system files mean the usable space is somewhat lower than the stated figure.
  • Games you play: confirm the titles you care about are supported on expansion storage, and keep in mind that some may still need the internal drive.
  • Genuine product: check you are getting the licensed Seagate card, model STJR1000400.
  • Care: the card is meant to be left in the console. Follow the manual when removing it and avoid pulling it out while the console is on.
  • Portability: it works only with Series X|S consoles, so it cannot be used as a general-purpose drive on a PC.
