The Samsung T9 Portable SSD is a pocket-sized external drive that connects over USB. The 1TB model, MU-PG1T0B/AM, is rated for sequential read and write speeds of up to 2,000MB/s, and Samsung aims it at creators, gamers, students and professionals who move large files often.

What USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 means

The headline speed depends on the connection. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is a 20Gbps standard, twice the 10Gbps of USB 3.2 Gen 2. Samsung's own note says the maximum speeds are reached only when the host device and the cable both support Gen 2x2 and UASP mode is enabled. Samsung also says performance varies with the host configuration.

Many computers don't have a Gen 2x2 port. On a port that runs at a lower speed, the drive still works, but it is limited by that port. Check your computer's port specification, not only the connector shape.

Sustained speed and heat

Samsung says the drive holds its speeds during longer jobs. It calls its heat-control approach Dynamic Thermal Guard, and says the SSD is kept at suitable temperatures even in heavy use. The brand also states that skin temperatures stay below 140°F (60°C) in controlled testing, in line with the IEC 62368-1 standard. That matters for long transfers and video work, where drives can otherwise slow down as they warm up.

Capacity and compatibility

The 1TB model suits a large photo library, several video projects or a handful of big games. Samsung says the T9 line goes up to 4TB. Samsung describes compatibility with desktops, cameras and gaming consoles, and notes that host compatibility varies, so check your specific device.

The listing also says the drive supports iPhone 15 Pro Res 4K at 60fps video, and recommends using the included SSD cable for that. That makes it an option for recording directly to external storage.

Software and drive health

Samsung's Magician software is offered with the drive. According to the brand, it provides firmware updates, extra encryption and continual monitoring of drive health. Software like this is useful for keeping firmware current and for setting a password if you carry sensitive files.

Size and weight

It measures about 3.5 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches and weighs roughly 0.3 lb, so it slips into a jacket pocket or camera bag. Samsung says components such as the DRAM and NAND are produced in-house.

Who it suits

  • Photographers and video editors who work with large files and want to edit from an external drive.
  • Gamers who want extra storage for a console or a desktop.
  • Students and professionals who carry projects between machines.

What to check before you buy

  • Ports: confirm your computer has a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port if you want the full 2,000MB/s. A slower port works but caps the speed.
  • Cable: use a cable that supports the same standard.
  • Phone or camera: check the device's own compatibility notes and whether an adapter is needed.
  • Console use: compatibility varies, so check your console's documentation.
  • Capacity: note that Samsung counts 1TB as one trillion bytes, so the usable space shown by an operating system is slightly lower.
  • Backups: an SSD is one copy of your data, so keep a second backup of anything important.

The short version

  • A 1TB portable SSD from Samsung, model MU-PG1T0B/AM.
  • Rated for up to 2,000MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2.
  • Needs a Gen 2x2 port, a matching cable and UASP mode for the top speed.
  • Samsung describes a heat-control design and Magician software with encryption and drive monitoring.
  • About 3.5 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches and 0.3 lb.
