The Samsung T7 Shield (model MU-PE4T0S/AM) is a palm-sized portable solid state drive with a rubberised outer shell. This version holds 4TB. It is built for people who carry large files between places, such as photographers, video makers and anyone moving projects between computers, and who want a drive that tolerates rough handling.
Speed and the USB connection
Samsung rates the drive at up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write. It connects with USB 3.2 Gen 2 and uses NVMe technology internally. Samsung says that makes it almost twice as fast as the earlier T5.
Reaching those figures takes the right setup. Samsung notes the host device and the cable must support USB 3.2 Gen 2, and UASP mode must be enabled. Performance also varies with the host configuration. A port or cable that is slower will limit the drive.
What IP65 and the drop figure mean
The IP65 code has two parts: the 6 means the casing is dust-tight, and the 5 means it resists water jets. Samsung says the tests were run under controlled conditions: water flow at 100 kPa for 3 minutes, and active dust at 2 kg/m³ for 8 hours. It adds that real-world resistance may vary. IP65 does not cover submersion, so keep the drive out of water.
The elastomer outer layer adds protection, and Samsung says the drive withstood a 9.8-foot (3-metre) drop in controlled tests. Dynamic Thermal Guard is the brand's heat management feature, which helps control temperature during heavy use.
Capacity
The T7 range offers 1TB to 4TB, according to Samsung. At 4TB, there is space for large photo libraries, many hours of high-resolution video, or game libraries. As usual for storage, the capacity is counted in decimal units, so the amount a computer shows will be a little lower.
Compatibility
Samsung says it works with PC, Mac, Android devices, gaming consoles and more. It also says the drive supports iPhone 15 Pro recording of 4K video at 60 fps, and recommends the included SSD cable for that use. The listing certifies a long list of regulatory marks, including CE, FCC, UL, TUV and UKCA.
Software
Samsung Magician software lets you monitor drive health, protect data, receive updates and set LED colour combinations.
Size
It measures about 3.4 x 2.2 x 0.5 inches (roughly 86 x 56 x 13 mm), and the listing gives its weight as 0.2 lb, which makes it easy to carry in a pocket or camera bag.
Who it suits
It suits creators who edit directly from an external drive, travellers who back up files on the move, and anyone who wants extra storage for a console or phone. For occasional backups where speed matters less, a slower drive could also work.
What to check before you buy
- Ports and cables: check that your computer's port and the cable support USB 3.2 Gen 2 for full speed.
- Device support: confirm the drive works with your phone, tablet or console, following the maker's guidance.
- Resistance limits: IP65 means splash and dust resistance, not submersion.
- Backups: a single drive is a single point of failure, so keep a second copy of important files.
- Software: Samsung Magician is optional; check which systems it supports.
