The Samsung T5 EVO (model MU-PH2T0S/AM) is a portable external solid state drive in a 2TB capacity. It is built for people who move large files between devices, such as gamers, photographers and video editors, and who want a drive small enough to carry in a pocket. Here is what its specs mean and what to confirm before you rely on it.
What a portable SSD changes
Unlike a spinning hard drive, an SSD has no moving parts. It reads and writes to flash memory, which typically means faster file transfers, silent operation and better tolerance of knocks. Samsung positions the T5 EVO as an alternative to external hard drives, saying it is optimized for large file transfers with an improved Intelligent TurboWrite feature. TurboWrite generally refers to a fast buffer that absorbs data at high speed before it is moved into the main memory.
Speed in practice
Samsung lists sequential read speeds of up to 460MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 1. That interface is also sold as USB 3.0 or "5Gbps USB", and its ceiling is about 500MB/s in theory, so the drive is working close to what the connection allows. Sequential speed is what matters when you copy big files, such as video footage, game installs or photo libraries. Many small files usually transfer more slowly than one large file of the same total size.
Real speeds depend on the port, the cable and the device. A host with a slower port will limit the drive, and a faster port will not push it past its own listed speed.
Size, weight and durability
The drive measures about 3.7 x 1.6 x 0.7 inches (roughly 9.4 x 4.1 x 1.8 cm) and weighs about 0.2 lb (around 90 g). Samsung says it offers shock resistance and fall protection up to 6 feet (about 1.8 m), based on a free-fall test under controlled conditions. That figure describes a test, not a guarantee against every drop, so a case is still sensible if you travel with it.
Capacity and what 2TB holds
Samsung offers the T5 EVO in capacities from 2TB to 8TB, and this is the 2TB model. In general terms, 2TB holds a large game library, tens of thousands of high-resolution photos or many hours of 4K footage, depending on formats and bitrates. Formatted capacity shows as slightly less in your operating system, which is normal.
Where it works
Samsung describes extensive compatibility with desktops, cameras and gaming consoles, and adds that host device compatibility may vary. For consoles in particular, check which kinds of games or files the console allows on an external drive, as some limit external drives to certain uses.
Who it suits
It suits creators who offload footage on location, gamers who want extra space for installs, and anyone who wants a fast, compact backup or transfer drive. It is less relevant if you need the highest speeds available today, since faster interfaces exist.
What to check before you buy
- Ports and cable: confirm your computer or console has a compatible USB port and that the right cable is in the box.
- Device support: check that your camera or console works with external drives of this type and capacity.
- File system: the drive may need formatting for your system, and some formats don't work on every device.
- Speed expectations: real-world speeds depend on the port and the files you move.
- Backups: keep important data in more than one place, since any drive can fail.
