The Samsung 990 PRO is an internal solid-state drive in the compact M.2 2280 format, connecting over PCIe 4.0 using the NVMe protocol. This model (MZ-V9P4T0BW) offers 4 TB of capacity. Samsung positions it for high-end gaming PCs, 4K video and 3D editing, and data analytics.
What PCIe 4.0 and NVMe mean
NVMe is a protocol designed for flash storage. It lets a drive talk to the processor over PCI Express lanes rather than the older SATA interface, which caps out at roughly 550 MB/s. PCIe 4.0 doubles the per-lane bandwidth of PCIe 3.0, which is why drives like this can reach several gigabytes per second. Samsung rates the 990 PRO at up to 7,450 MB/s sequential read and 6,900 MB/s sequential write, and says those figures apply to all capacities from 1 TB to 4 TB.
Those are peak sequential figures, measured under ideal conditions. In everyday use, such as launching apps or loading small files, results depend on the system, the workload and the drive's state.
Heat spreader and thermal control
Fast SSDs generate heat, and many reduce their speed when they get too warm. Samsung says this drive combines a Heat Spreader with Dynamic Thermal Guard technology to protect against overheating, supporting long-lasting performance. In general, thermal guard features monitor temperature and adjust speed to keep the drive within safe limits.
Check that the heat spreader leaves enough clearance in your machine, since some laptops and motherboards have limited space or their own heatsinks.
4 TB in an M.2 2280 slot
The 2280 name means 22 mm wide and 80 mm long, which is the most common M.2 length. The listing gives the dimensions as 3.1 x 0.9 x 0.1 inches (about 79 x 23 x 3 mm). Samsung says it suits high-performance gaming PCs and notebooks or ultrabooks. Four terabytes is a lot of room for a large game library or raw 4K footage on a single slot.
Samsung Magician software
Samsung provides its Magician software for drive management. According to the brand, it handles drive updates and performance optimisation. Tools of this kind typically also show drive health and capacity use.
What's in the box
The listing states the package contains one 990 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD at 4 TB capacity. Because only the drive is listed, plan for any mounting screw or standoff your motherboard or laptop needs.
Who it suits
It suits people who build or upgrade a PC and want a fast primary or secondary drive, video editors who handle large project files, and anyone who wants to put a big game library on one drive. It is less relevant for older systems without a compatible M.2 NVMe slot.
What to check before you buy
- Slot type: confirm your motherboard or laptop has an M.2 2280 slot that supports NVMe, and check the manual for which slots run at PCIe 4.0.
- PCIe generation: on a PCIe 3.0 slot the drive will work in many systems but is limited to that slot's speed.
- Clearance: check height limits under heatsinks or in laptop bays.
- Console use: if you plan to use it in a games console, check the console maker's drive requirements, including heatsink rules.
- Cloning or fresh install: plan how you will move your data or install the operating system.
The short version
- 4 TB internal NVMe SSD in the M.2 2280 format, using PCIe 4.0.
- Up to 7,450 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write, as rated by Samsung.
- Heat Spreader and Dynamic Thermal Guard to manage heat.
- Samsung Magician software for updates and optimisation.
- Check slot type, PCIe support and clearance before fitting.
