The Samsung 990 PRO is an internal M.2 2280 solid-state drive that uses the PCIe 4.0 interface. This 2TB model (MZ-V9P2T0B/AM) is aimed at gaming, video editing and workstation use. Here is what its specifications mean and what to confirm before fitting one.

PCIe 4.0 and what the speeds mean

Samsung rates the drive at up to 7,450MB/s sequential read and 6,900MB/s sequential write. Samsung's own note says the theoretical best for PCIe 4.0 sequential read is about 8,000MB/s, so the drive sits close to the interface ceiling. Those figures come from Samsung's test system, an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X on an X570 board, and real results vary with firmware, hardware and settings.

Sequential speed matters when moving big files such as video projects or game installs. For general use, random performance has more effect on how responsive a system feels. Samsung says the 990 PRO offers more than a 55% improvement in random performance over the 980 PRO.

Power efficiency and heat

Samsung claims up to 50% better performance per watt than the 980 PRO, and cites sequential figures of 1,380 and 1,319 MB per watt for the 1TB model. It says its in-house controller uses smart heat control. Efficiency matters most in laptops, where lower power use can mean less heat and better battery life. Fast NVMe drives still warm up under heavy loads, so airflow and a heatsink, where your system provides one, are worth considering.

Capacity and software

The line runs from 1TB to 4TB. A 2TB drive suits a sizeable game library, a working video project folder or a main system drive with room to spare. Samsung's listing also mentions Intelligent Turbo Write, a technique that uses part of the drive as a fast write buffer, which means very long continuous writes can slow down once the buffer is full.

Who it suits

It suits desktop builders and laptop owners with a free PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot who want a high-performance primary or secondary drive, along with creators and gamers who work with large files.

What to check before you buy

  • Slot and size: confirm your system has an M.2 2280 slot with NVMe support. Check your manual for which slots share bandwidth with others.
  • PCIe generation: Samsung advises checking that your system supports PCIe 4.0 to reach full performance. Older slots work but run slower.
  • Heatsink and clearance: check whether your motherboard or laptop provides cooling, and how much room there is.
  • Moving your system: plan how to clone or reinstall your operating system.
  • Backups: keep important files backed up whatever the drive.
  • Warranty: read Samsung's terms.

The short version

  • A 2TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD on a PCIe 4.0 interface.
  • Rated at up to 7,450MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write.
  • Samsung cites 55% better random performance and 50% better performance per watt than the 980 PRO.
  • Capacities from 1TB to 4TB.
  • Needs a compatible M.2 slot to reach its full speed.
