The Samsung 990 PRO (MZ-V9P1T0B/AM) is a 1TB internal SSD in the M.2 2280 format that uses the PCIe 4.0 interface. Samsung aims it at gamers, enthusiasts and people with heavy workloads, and says it reaches close to the maximum performance of PCIe 4.0. It is a bare drive, roughly 3.1 by 0.9 inches, which slots directly onto a motherboard or into a compatible console bay.
Reading the speed figures
Samsung rates sequential read and write speeds at up to 7,450/6,900 MB/s. Sequential speed describes how fast large files move. The drive also lists up to 1,400K/1,550K IOPS for random read/write. Random performance matters for loading many small files, which is what operating systems and games do all the time. Samsung says random read and write are 40% and 55% faster than the 980 PRO.
Samsung adds that its measurements used Intelligent Turbo Write, which operates only within a specific transfer size, and that results vary with firmware and system hardware.
Power efficiency and heat
Samsung claims up to 50% better performance per watt than the 980 PRO. Fast drives get warm, so the company points to its in-house nickel-coated controller for thermal control. Real-world temperatures depend on the airflow and heatsink in your system.
Gaming features
Samsung says the drive's random performance suits PS5 and DirectStorage PC games, a Microsoft technology that loads game assets directly from fast NVMe storage. Samsung also notes the slim size suits systems that meet the PCI-SIG D8 standard, which specifies an 8.8 mm maximum height. Check the PS5 requirements, since consoles usually need a heatsink.
Software
Software matters less for an internal drive than for an external one, but a utility is still useful for keeping firmware current. Samsung Magician lets you monitor drive health, receive updates and optimise the drive.
Who it suits
In practice, the drive is best matched to people who will notice the difference: those who copy large files often, work with big project folders, or want games to load as quickly as their system allows. It suits people building or upgrading a PC who want a fast boot and games drive, and professionals moving large files. If your motherboard supports only PCIe 3.0 the drive will still generally work, but it can't reach the top speeds.
What to check before you buy
- Slot support: confirm you have a free M.2 2280 slot with PCIe 4.0 and NVMe support.
- Cooling: this listing describes a bare drive. Check whether your motherboard provides a heatsink, and for a console, whether one is required.
- Height clearance: make sure your laptop or console accepts a drive of this size.
- Capacity: 1TB fills quickly with modern games.
- Backups: back up your data before cloning or reinstalling.
