The Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink is a 1TB M.2 NVMe solid-state drive using the PCIe 4.0 interface (model MZ-V9P1T0CW). It adds a heatsink to Samsung's 990 PRO drive and is described as suitable for PlayStation 5 consoles and for desktops and laptops that meet a particular height standard. It targets gamers and people working with large files.
What PCIe 4.0 and the speed figures mean
PCIe 4.0 is a generation of the connection between a drive and the rest of a computer. Samsung rates this drive at sequential read and write speeds up to 7,450 and 6,900MB/s, and random performance up to 1,400K and 1,550K IOPS. Sequential speed describes moving large files, while IOPS describes how many small reads and writes happen each second, which affects how responsive an operating system or game feels. Samsung notes that its figures depend on system hardware, firmware and configuration, and the write numbers rely on Intelligent Turbo Write, which works only within a certain transfer size.
Comparison with the earlier model
Samsung says random read and write speeds are about 40% and 55% higher than the 980 PRO, and that performance per watt is up to 50% better. These are the brand's own comparisons from internal tests, so treat them as indications rather than guarantees.
Heat control and the heatsink
Fast SSDs can slow down when they get hot, a behaviour called thermal throttling. Samsung says the in-house controller has a nickel coating and smart heat control meant to prevent performance drops. The integrated heatsink spreads heat, and the listing says it has RGB LED lighting, which is a cosmetic feature for PC builds with windows.
PS5, DirectStorage and PC use
For console use, Samsung says the heatsink version is compatible with PlayStation 5, and it is the only console it names. On Windows PCs, the listing refers to Microsoft DirectStorage, a technology that lets games load data from fast NVMe drives more directly. Whether a game benefits depends on whether it supports DirectStorage.
Samsung Magician software
The Samsung Magician utility lets you monitor drive health, apply updates and use optimisation tools. It is optional but helpful for checking firmware and temperature.
The height standard
The listing says the heatsink version fits desktops and laptops meeting the PCI-SIG D8 standard, which it gives as an 8.8mm maximum height. A laptop with a tight M.2 bay may not leave that much room, so measure or check the manual.
Who it suits
It suits gamers upgrading PS5 or PC storage, and creators who edit video or work with 3D files. Someone whose computer only has an older SATA or PCIe 3.0 slot would not see the full rated speeds.
What to check before you buy
- Slot type and height: confirm an M.2 2280 slot with PCIe 4.0 support and enough clearance for the heatsink.
- Console fit: check PS5 system requirements on the PlayStation and Samsung sites.
- Capacity: 1TB is one trillion bytes, and usable space is a little lower after formatting.
- Airflow: a heatsink works better with some airflow in the case.
- Speed expectations: quoted speeds are best-case results from the brand's test system.
