Samsung 990 EVO 1TB NVMe SSD: PCIe 4.0 x4 and 5.0 x2 specs explained

A 1TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD from Samsung rated at up to 5,000/4,200 MB/s, with a PCIe 4.0 x4 or 5.0 x2 interface and Magician software. What the specs mean.

The Samsung 990 EVO (model MZ-V9E1T0B/AM) is a 1TB internal M.2 2280 NVMe solid state drive for desktops and laptops. It is designed as a general-purpose upgrade for loading games, saving files and running everyday work, with an emphasis on power efficiency and temperature control rather than only peak speed.

Reading the speed figures

Samsung rates the drive at up to 5,000 MB/s sequential reads and 4,200 MB/s sequential writes. Sequential speed describes how quickly large files move, such as a game install or a video export. For comparison, SATA drives typically top out around 550 MB/s, so an NVMe drive like this is several times faster on large transfers.

Samsung measured these figures on a specific test system with Intelligent Turbo Write active, and says results vary with firmware, system hardware and configuration.

What PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2 mean

A PCIe slot is described by its generation and its number of lanes. The 990 EVO works as a PCIe 4.0 x4 drive (four lanes) or a PCIe 5.0 x2 drive (two lanes). Each PCIe generation roughly doubles the speed of each lane, so the two modes offer similar bandwidth. The two-lane option is useful on newer systems that split lanes between several devices.

The drive's own limit is the 5,000 MB/s figure, so it does not use the full bandwidth of either connection. It also works in most systems with a compatible M.2 slot, and Samsung suggests checking your system's PCIe support on the Intel or AMD website.

Power efficiency

Samsung says the 990 EVO delivers up to 70% better performance per watt than the 970 EVO Plus, quoting 1,020/933 MB/s per watt for sequential read and write against 636/550 for the older drive, measured on the 1TB model. Lower power draw typically helps laptops run cooler and may help battery life, though the effect depends on how the machine is used.

Thermal control

Instead of a bulky heatsink, the drive uses a tuned controller and a heat-spreading label. Samsung says this limits sudden performance drops under heavy workloads. Because it is thin, the drive fits most laptop and desktop slots without extra clearance, though a motherboard heatsink can still be used.

Magician software

Samsung's Magician software provides firmware updates, optional encryption and monitoring of the drive's condition. Samsung says it keeps the drive up to date over time.

Who it suits

It suits people upgrading from a hard drive or an older SATA SSD, gamers who want faster load times, and anyone building a PC who wants a 1TB main drive. Those who edit large video files may want more capacity, which Samsung offers in other sizes.

What to check before you buy

  • Slot: confirm your computer has an M.2 2280 slot that supports NVMe, not SATA-only.
  • PCIe support: an older slot will work at lower speeds than the rated maximum.
  • Capacity: 1TB fills quickly with large games or video projects.
  • Cooling: check whether your laptop or motherboard provides its own heatsink or cover.
  • Backups: keep important data copied elsewhere.

The short version

  • 1TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, model MZ-V9E1T0B/AM.
  • Rated at up to 5,000/4,200 MB/s sequential read and write.
  • Works as PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2.
  • Samsung cites up to 70% better performance per watt than the 970 EVO Plus.
  • Samsung Magician software for firmware updates and monitoring.
