The Samsung 980 is an internal NVMe solid state drive in the M.2 2280 size, with a PCIe 3.0 x4 interface. This 500GB version is used as a boot drive or main storage in desktops and laptops that have a free M.2 slot. Samsung presents it as a step up from SATA drives for gaming and general computing.
What NVMe and PCIe 3.0 x4 mean
NVMe is a protocol built for flash storage, and it talks to the processor directly over PCIe lanes instead of the older SATA interface. This drive uses four PCIe 3.0 lanes. Samsung lists sequential read and write speeds of up to 3,500 and 3,000 MB/s, which it says is over 6.2 times the speed of SATA SSDs. These are the brand's maximum figures, measured on a test system, and real results vary with firmware, hardware and workload.
Intelligent TurboWrite and sustained speeds
The listing's note says the quoted write speeds were measured with Intelligent TurboWrite active. This is a fast buffer region that absorbs bursts of writing. After the region fills, Samsung gives sequential writes of up to 500 MB/s for the 500GB model. Everyday use, like loading programs and games, rarely hits that point, but very large file transfers might.
Host Memory Buffer
The title mentions HMB (Host Memory Buffer) technology, which Samsung explains as letting the SSD use part of the host system's DRAM for read/write caching and buffering. This is how some drives work without their own DRAM chip.
Endurance and warranty
Endurance is rated in TBW, terabytes written. The listing's headline says up to 600 TBW, but the fine print gives the warrantied figure for each size: 150 TBW for 250GB, 300 TBW for 500GB and 600 TBW for 1TB. For this 500GB drive, the relevant number is 300 TBW. The warranty is five years or the TBW, whichever comes first.
Thermal management and Full Power Mode
Samsung says the drive uses nickel coating to help manage the controller's heat and a heat spreader label for the NAND chip. A thermal control algorithm manages heat on its own, aiming to limit performance changes over long use. Full Power Mode, which you enable in Samsung Magician software, keeps the drive in an active state for consistent performance, though this generally increases power use, which matters on laptops.
Samsung Magician software
The Magician software lets you monitor drive health, optimise performance, protect data and receive updates, according to the brand.
Size and compatibility
The M.2 2280 format is 22 mm wide and 80 mm long. The listing gives roughly 3.1 x 0.9 x 0.1 inches. PCIe 3.0 drives also work in PCIe 4.0 slots, at 3.0 speeds, but you should confirm that your motherboard or laptop has an M.2 slot that supports NVMe rather than SATA only.
Who it suits
It suits people upgrading from a hard drive or SATA SSD, building a PC with a PCIe 3.0 or newer M.2 slot, or adding fast storage to a laptop.
What to check before you buy
- Slot type: confirm an M.2 2280 slot with NVMe support.
- Capacity: 500GB fills quickly with large games and media libraries.
- Heat: check whether your board or laptop adds a heatsink.
- Cloning or setup: plan how you'll move your existing system over.
- Software: Magician is a separate download and works on Windows.
The short version
- A 500GB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD on PCIe 3.0 x4.
- Sequential speeds up to 3,500 MB/s read and 3,000 MB/s write, as Samsung rates them.
- 300 TBW and a five-year limited warranty for the 500GB model.
- Nickel-coated controller, thermal control and Magician software.
