The Samsung 980 1TB (model MZ-V8V1T0B/AM) is an internal solid-state drive in the M.2 2280 format. It connects over PCIe 3.0 x4 using the NVMe protocol, and Samsung positions it for gaming, graphics work and everyday use in PCs and laptops. Here is what its specs mean.
NVMe, PCIe 3.0 and M.2 2280
M.2 is the small, stick-shaped card format, and 2280 means 22mm wide and 80mm long. NVMe is the protocol that lets the drive talk to the processor over PCI Express, instead of the older SATA path. PCIe 3.0 x4 means four lanes of third-generation PCIe. Samsung lists sequential reads of up to 3,500MB/s and writes of up to 3,000MB/s, which it says is over 6.2 times the speed of SATA SSDs (a comparison with its own SATA drives). In everyday use, gains show most in large file transfers, game loading and heavy projects.
The listing's feature bullet shows the speed as "3500.0 megabits_per_second", which looks like a unit error, and the description and title both give 3,500MB/s. Samsung notes that performance varies with firmware, system and hardware configuration.
HMB technology and Intelligent TurboWrite
The 980 uses HMB (Host Memory Buffer), which lets the SSD borrow a small part of the computer's own memory for caching, instead of carrying its own DRAM chip. In general, this helps keep a drive simpler and compact while keeping responsiveness.
Intelligent TurboWrite uses a fast write area for bursts. Samsung's notes say sequential writes after the TurboWrite region fills are lower: up to 250MB/s on the 250GB model, 500MB/s on the 500GB model and 900MB/s on the 1TB model. Most people rarely fill that region, but it matters for very large transfers.
Full Power Mode and Magician software
Full Power Mode keeps the SSD in an active state for consistent performance, with no wake-up delay. Samsung says you enable it through its Magician software. Magician also monitors drive health, optimises performance and delivers updates. Note that keeping a drive active typically uses more power, which matters mostly on a laptop battery.
Endurance and security
Samsung lists up to 600 TBW (terabytes written) for the 1TB model, with 150 for the 250GB and 300 for the 500GB. TBW is the total amount of data the drive is designed to have written to it over its life, and it is not a promise of failure at that point. Security features listed are AES 256-bit full disk encryption, TCG/Opal V2.0 and Encrypted Drive (IEEE1667). Support depends on your system and software.
Size and fit
The drive measures about 3.1 inches long, and fits the M.2 2280 slots found on many modern desktop motherboards and laptops. Check that your slot supports NVMe, as some M.2 slots support only SATA.
Who it suits
It suits upgrading a PC or laptop from a hard drive or SATA SSD, adding game storage, or building a system with a free M.2 NVMe slot. A newer PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 slot will still work with it, but at PCIe 3.0 speed.
What to check before you buy
- Slot type: confirm an M.2 2280 slot with NVMe support, and note the space for the card.
- Heat: some laptops and motherboards include a heatsink; check how yours handles it.
- Capacity: 1TB suits a main drive for most people, but large game libraries may need more.
- Moving your data: plan to clone your existing drive or install the operating system fresh.
- Backups: keep important files copied elsewhere.
- Warranty terms: read the manufacturer's current terms.
The short version
- A 1TB, M.2 2280 NVMe SSD on PCIe 3.0 x4 from Samsung.
- Up to 3,500MB/s sequential reads and 3,000MB/s writes, with HMB technology.
- Intelligent TurboWrite and a Full Power Mode through Magician software.
- Up to 600 TBW and AES 256-bit encryption.
- Needs an M.2 slot with NVMe support.
