Samsung 9100 PRO 4TB PCIe 5.0 SSD with Heatsink: specs and who it suits

The Samsung 9100 PRO with Heatsink 4TB is a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 2280 SSD rated at up to 14,800/13,400 MB/s. What the specs mean and what to check first.

The Samsung 9100 PRO with Heatsink (model MZ-VAP4T0CW) is a 4TB internal SSD that uses the PCIe 5.0 interface. It comes with a heatsink already attached and is aimed at gaming, 4K and 8K video work, AI applications and workstations that move very large files.

What PCIe 5.0 x4 means

PCIe 5.0 is the fifth generation of the PCI Express interface, and "x4" means the drive uses four lanes. Each generation roughly doubles the bandwidth of the last. Samsung rates the 4TB model at up to 14,800 MB/s sequential read and 13,400 MB/s sequential write, and says that is up to twice as fast as its 990 PRO. Samsung notes that the writing figure was measured with Intelligent TurboWrite active, and that results depend on firmware, capacity and system hardware. The 14,800 MB/s figure came from a test system with an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, so you need a board that supports PCIe 5.0 to approach it.

Random performance

Random read and write speeds are rated up to 2,200K and 2,600K IOPS. IOPS count how many small reads and writes the drive handles per second, which matters for launching programs, loading game assets and running many tasks at once. Samsung says this supports fast game loads and AI content creation.

Efficiency and thermal control

The controller uses a 5nm process, and Samsung says power efficiency is up to 49% better than the 990 PRO, based on its tests. Advanced thermal control aims to keep performance steady, and fast drives generate considerable heat. The included heatsink helps with that. Samsung says the heatsink on the 1TB, 2TB and 4TB versions is PCI-SIG D8 compliant.

Slim profile and PlayStation 5

The drive is listed as low as 0.35 inch thick, and Samsung says it fits compatible PCs, laptops and PlayStation 5. For the PS5, check Sony's M.2 SSD requirements, and make sure the heatsink version is suitable for your console and your specific laptop.

Capacity and Magician software

The range goes up to 8TB, though this listing is the 4TB model. Samsung Magician software handles firmware updates, extra encryption and drive health monitoring, and an internet connection is required for authentication.

Who it suits

It suits builders and creators with a PCIe 5.0 motherboard who regularly move large video files, run big datasets or want a large game library on one fast drive.

What to check before you buy

  • Motherboard support: confirm that your M.2 slot supports PCIe 5.0 x4, and look for slot sharing noted in the manual. The drive may work in older slots at a lower speed.
  • Height: the heatsink adds thickness, so check clearance under any board cover or laptop panel.
  • Compatibility: laptops and consoles vary, so check your exact model.
  • Cooling: consider case airflow even with the heatsink.
  • Speeds: the quoted numbers are best-case figures from Samsung's test setup.
  • Backups: back up any data before moving to a new drive.
