Samsung 9100 PRO 1TB PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD: features, specs and who it suits
A 1TB M.2 2280 PCIe 5.0 x4 SSD rated at up to 14,800MB/s read and 13,400MB/s write, with a 5nm controller. What the specs mean and who it suits.

The Samsung 9100 PRO is an M.2 2280 solid-state drive built on the PCIe 5.0 x4 interface. This 1TB version (MZ-VAP1T0B/AM) is aimed at gaming, 4K and 8K video work, AI applications and workstations. Here is what PCIe 5.0 means and what to check before buying.
What PCIe 5.0 changes
Each PCIe generation roughly doubles the bandwidth of the one before. Samsung rates the 9100 PRO at up to 14,800MB/s sequential read and 13,400MB/s sequential write, and says that is about twice the speed of its 990 PRO, a PCIe 4.0 model. Samsung notes that its top figure was measured on the 4TB model, on an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X system with an X670E board, and that results vary by capacity, firmware and hardware.
Sequential speeds matter most when moving huge files. Everyday tasks like opening apps depend more on latency and random performance, and for those, Samsung lists up to 2,200K random read and 2,600K random write IOPS. IOPS means input/output operations per second.
Efficiency and heat
PCIe 5.0 drives are known for producing more heat than earlier generations. Samsung says a 5nm controller improves power efficiency by up to 49% compared with the 990 PRO, and that advanced thermal control keeps performance steady. Its figures are 1,822 and 1,703 MB per watt for sequential reads and writes, measured on the 2TB model. Even so, a heatsink or good case airflow is typically important with drives of this class.
Capacity
The range extends up to 8TB, according to Samsung, with the larger size listed as arriving later. The 1TB version is a sensible size for a main drive in a system focused on speed, while heavier users may want a larger model.
Software
Samsung's Magician software provides firmware updates, additional encryption and drive-health monitoring. The listing notes that an internet connection is required for authentication.
Who it suits
It suits people building or upgrading a system with a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, such as creators handling 4K and 8K video, developers working with large datasets, and gamers who want very fast load times.
What to check before you buy
- PCIe 5.0 support: Samsung advises checking that your system supports PCIe 5.0 through the Intel or AMD website. In a slower slot the drive runs at that slot's speed.
- Slot and size: confirm an M.2 2280 slot with NVMe support, and check your manual for slot sharing.
- Cooling: check whether your motherboard includes a heatsink and how much clearance you have, especially in a laptop.
- Real benefit: if your tasks are light, the extra bandwidth may go unused.
- Backups: keep important data backed up.
- Warranty: read Samsung's terms.
The short version
- A 1TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD on PCIe 5.0 x4.
- Rated at up to 14,800MB/s read and 13,400MB/s write.
- Up to 2,200K random read and 2,600K random write IOPS.
- 5nm controller; Samsung cites up to 49% better efficiency than the 990 PRO.
- Needs a PCIe 5.0 slot for its full speed.
