The Samsung 870 QVO (model MZ-77Q1T0B) is a 1TB internal solid state drive in the standard 2.5-inch SATA format. It is meant for upgrading a desktop PC or laptop that still has a SATA drive bay, typically replacing a mechanical hard disk or an older, smaller SSD. This page explains what its specifications mean and what to confirm before installing one.
What QLC flash means
Samsung calls the 870 QVO its second-generation QLC SSD. QLC flash stores four bits per cell, which usually allows larger capacities from fewer chips than TLC flash does. The usual trade-offs are lower endurance figures and, once the drive's fast write buffer is full, slower sustained writes. Samsung says the 870 QVO improves on the 860 QVO, with up to 13% better queue-depth-1 random read performance and up to 21% better sustained write performance, measured on its own test system.
Reading the speed figures
Samsung quotes sequential read and write speeds of up to 560 and 530 MB/s. The SATA III interface tops out at roughly 600 MB/s in practice, so these figures are near the ceiling of the interface. NVMe drives, which connect over PCIe, can be several times faster, but a SATA SSD is typically still a big improvement over a hard disk in boot times, application loading and general responsiveness.
Samsung says performance varies with firmware, system hardware and configuration, so results on an older computer may differ from the quoted maximums.
Endurance and warranty
Endurance is measured in TBW, terabytes written. For the 1TB model, Samsung states a guaranteed endurance of up to 360 TBW, and a limited warranty of up to three years or up to the TBW figure, whichever comes first. Samsung also says the larger models carry higher figures. For typical home use, such as documents, photos, games and media, the data written over a few years is usually well below those limits. Read the warranty statement in the package for the exact terms.
Capacity is counted by the manufacturer as 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, and some space is used for system and maintenance purposes, so your operating system will report slightly less than 1TB.
Installing it
The 2.5-inch, 7mm form factor fits most laptops and many desktops, either directly in a 2.5-inch bay or with a bracket in a 3.5-inch bay. It uses a SATA data cable, plus a SATA power connector in desktops. People commonly clone their existing drive across using cloning software, or reinstall the operating system. Samsung's Magician software is described as a way to monitor the health of the drive and keep its firmware up to date.
Who it suits
It suits owners of older laptops and desktops without an M.2 slot, people retiring a hard disk, and anyone who wants a roomy secondary drive for games, photos or media. It is a less natural choice if your computer has a free NVMe slot and you want maximum speed, or if you write very large amounts of data continuously.
What to check before you buy
- Bay and connector: confirm your device has a 2.5-inch SATA bay or an adapter.
- M.2 slots: an M.2 slot does not necessarily accept SATA 2.5-inch drives, and this drive is not an M.2 module.
- Cables: desktops need a free SATA data port and a SATA power connector.
- Data migration: plan how to move your files, and back them up first.
- Usage pattern: consider your daily write volume against the 360 TBW figure.
- Capacity needs: the range also comes in 2, 4 and 8TB sizes if 1TB will not be enough.
The short version
- A 1TB, 2.5-inch, 7mm SATA III internal SSD using QLC flash.
- Sequential speeds up to 560/530 MB/s, close to the SATA limit.
- Samsung quotes up to 360 TBW and a limited warranty of up to three years.
- Magician software helps with drive monitoring and updates.
- Best for upgrading SATA-based desktops and laptops.
