The Samsung 870 EVO (model MZ-77E1T0B/AM) is a 1TB solid state drive in the standard 2.5-inch SATA format. It is designed as a drop-in upgrade for older desktops and laptops that still use SATA drives, and also for network storage (NAS) systems and recording equipment.

SATA speed limits

SATA III has a ceiling of about 600 MB/s in practice, around 560 MB/s after overhead. Samsung rates the 870 EVO at sequential speeds of up to 560 MB/s read and 530 MB/s write, which it says maximizes what the interface allows. Faster NVMe drives exceed this, but they need an M.2 or PCIe slot, which older machines often lack. Samsung notes that results vary with firmware and system hardware.

Samsung also describes Intelligent TurboWrite and a larger variable buffer. This is a fast cache area that absorbs bursts of writing so the drive keeps its speed for longer. Once the buffer is full, writes typically slow down, which is normal for drives of this kind.

Endurance and warranty

Samsung rates the 1TB model at up to 600 TBW (terabytes written) under a five-year limited warranty, whichever limit comes first. TBW describes how much data can be written to the drive over its life. For context, even a heavy home user typically writes only a small fraction of that each year. Samsung lists the TBW for other capacities too, from 150 TBW at 250GB to 2,400 TBW at 4TB. Read the warranty statement in the package for its terms.

Compatibility and installation

The drive fits a standard 2.5-inch SATA bay, so installation is generally a matter of connecting a SATA data cable and power, or sliding it into a laptop bay. Samsung says it has been compatibility tested with major chipsets, motherboards, NAS devices and video recording devices, naming partners such as AMD, MSI, Gigabyte, Synology, QNAP and Blackmagic Design. It also supplies migration software to copy your existing drive's contents across.

Samsung Magician

Samsung Magician 6 is the free management software. Samsung says it helps you manage the drive, keep up with updates, monitor the drive's health and status, and enhance its performance. The drive supports S.M.A.R.T. reporting, which is a standard health-monitoring feature.

Encryption

The listing names AES 256-bit encryption (Class 0), TCG/Opal and IEEE 1667. These are hardware encryption standards. Using them typically requires compatible software or operating-system support, so check how your setup handles drive encryption before relying on it.

Who it suits

It suits owners of PCs, laptops and NAS units that use 2.5-inch SATA drives and want to replace a spinning hard drive or add faster storage. It also fits creators who record or edit larger files, since Samsung mentions workloads up to 8K video processing. It is not the right choice for a system that only has an M.2 NVMe slot.

What to check before you buy

  • Interface: confirm your device uses 2.5-inch SATA, not M.2 or mSATA.
  • Height: the drive is about 0.3 inch (7 mm) thick; check your bay.
  • Cables: a desktop needs a free SATA data port and power connector.
  • Migration: plan how you will copy your data, and back it up first.
  • Warranty: read the terms for the TBW and years limit.
