The Samsung 860 PRO 4TB (model MZ-76P4T0BW) is an internal solid state drive in the 2.5-inch SATA format. It swaps a laptop's or desktop's hard drive for flash storage, or adds a large, quiet drive alongside existing storage. Samsung positions the 860 PRO for high-end PCs, workstations and NAS systems, with large capacity as one of its main points.
SATA III and what the speeds mean
The 860 PRO connects over SATA III (6 Gb/s), the same interface used by 2.5-inch drives for many years. Samsung rates sequential reads at up to 560 MB/s and sequential writes at up to 530 MB/s. Those numbers sit close to the practical ceiling of the SATA interface itself, so SATA drives in general are limited by the connection rather than by the flash. Newer NVMe drives use a different connection and can be much faster, but a SATA drive such as this one is a simple fit for systems that have no NVMe slot.
Sequential speeds describe large, continuous transfers such as copying big files. Everyday use depends more on random access, and Samsung says the speeds are consistent and sustained even under heavy workloads and multitasking.
V-NAND and the controller
Samsung builds the drive on its V-NAND technology, which stacks memory cells in layers instead of laying them out flat. The company also describes a new MJX controller and a refined ECC (error-correcting code) algorithm. In general, the controller manages where data is stored and how it is corrected, and it has a large influence on how consistent a drive feels. Samsung also says improved queued trim helps compatibility with Linux.
Capacity and form factor
At 4TB, the drive holds a large library of project files, photos or video without a second drive. It measures about 3.9 x 2.8 x 0.3 inches (roughly 9.9 x 7.1 x 0.7 cm), the usual 2.5-inch drive footprint. The listing's 0.3 in thickness suggests a slim profile, but check your laptop's drive bay height, as some older machines are built around a specific thickness.
Operating systems and temperature
The listing names compatibility with Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit), Vista (SP1 and above), XP (SP2 and above), macOS and Linux. The operating temperature range is 0 to 70°C, which covers most indoor use.
Who it suits
Samsung describes the drive as suited to mainstream PCs and laptops for personal, gaming and business use, and to creative professionals and IT users who handle heavy workloads. Because it fits the common 2.5-inch SATA bay, it can also be used in some NAS enclosures and external drive housings that take that size.
What to check before you buy
- That your device has a 2.5-inch SATA bay or an enclosure for one. It will not fit an M.2 slot.
- The thickness your laptop's bay allows.
- Whether your system can address a 4TB drive; older firmware or partition styles can be limited. A modern setup typically uses GPT.
- Whether you need cloning software or a SATA-to-USB adapter to move your existing data across.
- That your BIOS or operating system can see the drive after installation.
- Keep backups, since any storage device can fail.
The short version
- A 4TB, 2.5-inch SATA III SSD using Samsung V-NAND.
- Rated at up to 560 MB/s reads and 530 MB/s writes.
- Works with Windows, macOS and Linux, per Samsung's compatibility list.
- Check the bay type, thickness and system support for large drives first.
