The Saiyin DS6960M is a pair of passive bookshelf speakers with three drivers each: a woofer, a midrange and a tweeter. They are meant for a stereo system or a home theatre built around a receiver or amplifier, and for people who like to build up a system piece by piece.
Passive means you need an amplifier
The listing says plainly that these are passive speakers. They must be powered by a receiver or amplifier, which isn't included, and speaker wire isn't included either. They have no Bluetooth. If you only have a phone or a TV, you'll need an amplifier or a receiver in between.
What "3-way" means
In a 3-way speaker, each driver handles a different part of the sound. Saiyin lists:
- A 5.25-inch paper cone woofer for bass, with a listed response down to 48Hz.
- A 1-inch elliptical midrange driver for voices and instruments. Saiyin says its oval shape widens the horizontal soundstage so vocals stay clear off-axis.
- A 20mm silk dome tweeter for treble. Silk domes are generally associated with a smooth, soft top end.
Splitting the range this way can reduce the blending of frequencies. Saiyin recommends the speakers for classical, jazz and acoustic music, as well as home theatre and turntable setups.
Reading the numbers
- Frequency response: 48Hz to 20kHz, which spans most of the audible range, though real-world bass depends on the room.
- Impedance: 4 ohms nominal. Most receivers support 4 to 8 ohms, but check your amp's manual.
- Sensitivity: 85 dB. This is on the lower side, which generally means the speaker needs a bit more amplifier power for a given loudness.
- Rated power: 5 to 50 watts per speaker. Pair them with an amplifier that fits within that range.
Tunable bass port
The speakers have a bass-reflex port. Saiyin supplies removable foam plugs: leave the port open for fuller bass in open spaces, or insert a plug to reduce bass output. In general, this helps if the speakers sit close to a wall or on a shelf, where bass can sound boomy.
Connections
The terminals are zinc alloy with a gold-plated finish. They accept banana plugs, U-type (spade) connectors, which Saiyin prefers, and bare wire. Keep the polarity consistent, red to red and black to black, on both speakers.
Size and warranty
Each speaker is about 12.2 inches tall, 7.7 wide and 6.7 deep (roughly 31 x 19.5 x 17 cm). Saiyin gives a 3-year manufacturer's warranty.
Who it suits
They suit listeners with a stereo receiver or amplifier who want a traditional two-speaker setup on shelves or stands, and who value music over wireless convenience. They're not a fit for those who want a plug-and-play wireless speaker.
What to check before you buy
- Amplifier: confirm you have a receiver or amp, and that it supports 4-ohm speakers.
- Cables: buy speaker wire and any plugs you need.
- Space: measure the shelf or stand, and leave room around the port.
- Source: check that your music or TV can connect to the amp.
- Placement: use the foam plugs to tune the bass for your room.
