The Saiyin DS6341M is a compact 2.1 sound bar with a separate wired subwoofer. At 11.7 inches long it is made for small screens and small spaces: a desktop monitor, a bedroom TV, a kitchen or an RV. It aims to give clearer speech and more bass than most built-in TV speakers.

What "2.1" means

The "2.1" describes two main channels, left and right, plus one subwoofer channel for low frequencies. Saiyin lists two 2.2 x 2.3-inch full-range drivers in the bar and a 5.25-inch, 40W wired subwoofer. A full-range driver handles most of the voice and music range, while the subwoofer takes the lowest notes.

Saiyin says the subwoofer reaches down to 50Hz. For context, many small TV speakers roll off well above that, so even this modest extension usually adds some weight to explosions and bass lines. It won't compare with a large home theatre subwoofer.

Controlling the bass and volume

On the remote, SUB+ and SUB- buttons set the bass in 10 levels, according to the listing. Volume has 32 steps, which Saiyin describes as smooth. Finer steps are handy for late-night viewing, because you can find a quiet level without jumping between settings.

Connections

  • Bluetooth for streaming from a phone or tablet (indicated by a blue light).
  • AUX for a 3.5 mm cable (green light).
  • Optical for a TV, computer or console (purple light).

The subwoofer has an attached cable that plugs into the SUB OUT / LINE OUT port on the bar. The listing notes that the bar works with standard audio outputs only. Set your source to PCM or stereo (non-surround) output, or you may hear crackling or nothing at all. This applies to most compact sound bars without surround decoding, and it's worth checking in your TV's audio menu.

Size and mounting

The bar is meant for screens of about 24 to 55 inches. The packaged dimensions are given as 13.7 x 11.8 x 4.8 inches. You can place it on a stand, shelf or desk, or hang it under the TV with the supplied wall-mounting kit. Check the wall type and follow the instructions for fixings.

Remotes and controls

You can use the supplied remote from up to 5 metres, or the buttons on the bar. Saiyin says the bar works with Fire TV, Apple TV and Google Chromecast remotes, and that a remote for Roku Express or Roku TVs can be provided on request (not for Roku stick). Check this for your own TV setup before relying on it.

Who it suits

It suits people with a smaller TV, a monitor or a compact room who want something simple and upgrade-friendly. It's less suited to large living rooms, to anyone who wants surround sound or Dolby Atmos, or to wireless-subwoofer setups, since this subwoofer is wired.

What to check before you buy

  • Your TV's outputs: confirm it has optical, AUX or Bluetooth, and that it can output PCM or stereo.
  • Space for the subwoofer: its cable has a fixed length, so it must sit within reach of the bar.
  • Screen size: the bar is 11.7 inches long, which fits smaller screens.
  • Wall mounting: check the wall and the mounting hardware if you plan to hang it.
  • Remote: confirm it works with the remote you use.
