The Sabrent Rocket Q4 2230 (model SB-213Q-2TB) is a 2TB NVMe solid state drive in the short M.2 2230 size. That size matters because handheld gaming PCs and some mini PCs have room for only a small module. Sabrent designed the drive to fit the Steam Deck, the ASUS ROG Ally and similar devices, and it lists compatibility with many longer slots too.
What M.2 2230 means
M.2 drives are named by their dimensions: 2230 is 22mm wide and 30mm long. The most common desktop and laptop size is 2280, which is 80mm long. A 2230 drive is much shorter, which is why it is used in handhelds with limited internal space. Sabrent describes this model as single-sided, with chips on one face only, which matters in devices where there is little clearance under the drive. Sabrent says it may also fit in many longer slots, but the slot needs a mounting point for a 2230 module or a suitable adapter.
PCIe 4.0 speeds in a small package
Sabrent quotes up to 5GB/s of sequential bandwidth and up to 800K IOPS. IOPS measures how many small read or write operations the drive handles per second, which affects how responsive a system feels when loading games and apps. The drive uses PCIe 4.0, and Sabrent says it keeps good latency, responsiveness and power efficiency when running in a PCIe 3.0 slot, though the top speed would then be limited by the slot.
What is inside
Sabrent says the drive combines a Phison E21T controller with Micron 3D QLC flash. Two details are worth explaining:
- HMB support: Host Memory Buffer lets a drive use a small part of the computer's main memory instead of carrying its own DRAM cache, which keeps the module small and efficient.
- QLC flash: four bits per cell typically makes large capacities possible in a small space. Sustained writes can slow once the fast write buffer fills, and endurance figures are generally lower than for TLC drives.
Sabrent says the dense flash runs cool even with 2TB in a single package, which matters in tight, passively cooled devices.
Software and warranty
The drive comes with a retail warranty and Sabrent support. Sabrent also includes a copy of Acronis True Image for cloning and imaging, which can help when moving an existing installation onto a new drive. Sabrent suggests registering the product on its website to extend the warranty.
Who it suits
It suits owners of handheld gaming PCs and compact systems who want more internal storage than the original drive provides, instead of relying on microSD cards or external drives. It also suits small-form-factor builds with a 2230 slot. It is less relevant for a standard desktop with a full-length 2280 slot, where more drive choices exist.
What to check before you buy
- Slot size and standoff: confirm your device takes a 2230 module and how the drive is secured.
- Interface: check that the slot supports NVMe over PCIe, not only SATA.
- Generation: a PCIe 3.0 slot works but caps the speed.
- Opening the device: swapping the drive can mean removing covers and shields; follow the maker's guidance and consider how it affects the device's warranty.
- Moving your data: back up first, and decide whether to clone or reinstall.
- Heat: some devices need a thermal pad or shield transferred from the old drive.
