The SABRENT Rocket 2230 (model SB-2130-1TB) is a 1TB internal solid state drive in the short M.2 2230 format. It is aimed at devices with very little internal space, such as handheld gaming PCs, thin tablets and small home-theatre computers, where a full-length M.2 drive simply will not fit.

What the 2230 size means

M.2 drives are named by their width and length in millimetres. A 2230 drive is 22 mm wide and 30 mm long, much shorter than the 2280 drives common in desktops and laptops. Many compact devices use this short slot, and SABRENT lists the Steam Deck and Microsoft Surface models among the devices it has in mind. The brand adds that the drive also works in many longer slots, which is typically possible because longer M.2 slots often include a screw position for 2230 drives. Check your own motherboard or device manual to confirm.

The drive is single-sided, meaning the memory chips sit on one face only. That matters in tight enclosures where there is little clearance beneath the drive.

PCIe 4.0 speeds in a small package

SABRENT rates the Rocket 2230 at up to 5GB/s and up to 800,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second). Sequential speed describes large file transfers, while IOPS describes how many small reads and writes the drive can handle, which is what makes an operating system and game loading feel responsive.

The drive uses PCIe 4.0 and NVMe. It is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0 and 2.0 slots, but bandwidth is reduced on the older standards, so a slower slot will cap the speed. Many handhelds use a slower link than the drive can manage, so real-world speed depends on the host device.

DRAM-less design with HMB

SABRENT describes the controller as a new PCIe 4.0 NVMe design paired with 3D TLC flash. The drive has no DRAM cache of its own. Instead it supports Host Memory Buffer (HMB), which lets the drive borrow a small slice of the computer's system memory to hold its mapping tables. This approach typically cuts cost, heat and power draw, which suits a small device with limited cooling. The brand says the drive is designed not to overheat a device.

TLC flash stores three bits per cell and is generally regarded as a good balance of endurance and capacity. SABRENT contrasts it with QLC flash, which some small-format drives use to reach higher capacities.

Capacity and cloning

The Rocket 2230 is offered at up to 1TB, which SABRENT presents as a large step up from the limited internal storage in many handheld devices, and an alternative to relying on microSD cards. A 1TB drive can hold a sizeable game library.

The drive comes with a retail warranty, and SABRENT says it is supported with firmware updates. A free download of Acronis True Image is included so you can clone an existing drive. Cloning generally means connecting both drives at once, so you may need a USB enclosure or adapter for the old one.

Who it suits

It suits owners of handheld PCs and compact laptops who want more space, as well as builders of small home-theatre or low-profile systems. It is less relevant for a standard desktop with a full-size M.2 slot, where 2280 drives offer more choice.

What to check before you buy

  • Slot size: confirm your device takes M.2 2230 (or has a 2230 mounting position) and uses NVMe, not SATA.
  • Slot speed: an older PCIe link will limit the drive's top speed.
  • Clearance: check the space and any shielding or bracket your device needs.
  • Warranty terms: open the device only as the manufacturer allows, since some warranties are affected.
  • Backup: back up your data before cloning or replacing a drive.

The short version

  • A 1TB M.2 2230 NVMe SSD, model SB-2130-1TB, made by SABRENT.
  • PCIe 4.0 with speeds of up to 5GB/s and 800,000 IOPS; works in slower slots at reduced speed.
  • DRAM-less with HMB support and 3D TLC flash.
  • Single-sided for tight spaces; retail warranty and Acronis True Image download.
