The Philips S7807 is a portable Bluetooth speaker from the brand's 7000 Series. It has a 40W output, a rugged IP67 casing and a battery rated for up to 24 hours, so it is designed to be carried outdoors as well as used around the house.

Sound

Philips says the speaker uses 70 mm woofers and two tweeters. In general, woofers handle bass and mid-range, tweeters handle high frequencies, and splitting the job between them tends to give a clearer result than a single driver. The 40W RMS figure is a measure of output power, but loudness also depends on the drivers and the room. Philips describes the result as clear sound with strong bass.

What IP67 means

An IP code has two digits. The first, 6, means the enclosure is dust-tight. The second, 7, means it can survive immersion in shallow water for a limited time, typically up to 1 metre for 30 minutes under test conditions. Philips says water and sand won't stop the music. Ports must be closed and covers sealed for that protection to apply, so check the manual, and rinse off salt or sand when needed.

Battery and power bank

The listed playtime is up to 24 hours on a full charge, and it varies with volume and use. The USB-C port is used for charging, and the speaker can also work as a power bank for connected devices, so a phone can be topped up while the music plays. Doing so drains the speaker's own battery faster.

Connections

The speaker uses Bluetooth 5.2. With multipoint connection, two devices can be paired at the same time, and you can switch between them. The built-in microphone lets you take a call without disconnecting. You can also pair it with a second S7807 for stereo, and the listing describes pressing and holding the play/pause button to talk to a voice assistant.

Controls and carrying

Buttons on the outer case control volume, playback, stereo pairing and Bluetooth. A lanyard strap makes it easy to hang or carry. The listing gives a weight of 4.2 lb (about 1.9 kg) and a body about 11 inches (28 cm) long, which is portable but not pocket-sized.

In the box

According to the listing: the speaker, a shoulder strap, a quick install guide and a worldwide warranty leaflet. A USB-C cable and charger are not listed, so check you have one.

Who it suits

It suits people who want a speaker for the garden, beach, camping or a gathering, and who value a durable build and long battery life more than a pocketable size.

What to check before you buy

  • Size and weight: check that it fits your bag.
  • Charging: make sure you have a USB-C cable and a power source.
  • Water use: read the manual on sealing the ports and cleaning after exposure.
  • Pairing: check your phone supports the voice assistant and multipoint features you want.
  • Second speaker: stereo pairing needs a matching unit.
  • Volume: consider where you will use it and who is nearby.
