The Patriot P210 is a 2TB solid-state drive in the standard 2.5-inch SATA III format. It is a drop-in storage upgrade for laptops and desktops that have a SATA drive bay, replacing a hard drive or adding space. Here is what the specs mean and what to confirm for your own computer.
2.5-inch SATA III: what it is
SATA III is the long-standing connection standard for internal drives, with a ceiling of roughly 600MB/s in practice. The 2.5-inch case with a 7mm height is the size used in most laptops and many desktops. Patriot says this drive uses the latest SATA 3 controller and comes in capacities up to 2TB. Because the format is so widespread, it typically fits where a 2.5-inch hard drive used to be.
What the speeds mean
Patriot rates sequential performance at up to 520MB/s read and up to 430MB/s write. Sequential speeds describe moving large files in one stream. Typical hard drives are far slower, so applications and the operating system usually load faster on an SSD.
The listing also gives a 4K aligned random write figure of up to 50K IOPS. Random 4K performance describes small reads and writes, which matter for everyday tasks such as starting programs. As with all such figures, they are the brand's maximums and real-world results depend on your system.
SATA is the limit here. NVMe drives, which use an M.2 slot or PCIe, are much faster on paper, but they need a compatible slot. For machines with only SATA bays, a SATA SSD is the correct choice.
Data protection features
Patriot lists three protective technologies:
- End-to-end data path protection: checks data as it moves through the drive to help prevent errors.
- SmartECC: error correction that helps detect and fix data errors.
- Thermal throttling: slows the drive down if it gets too hot, to protect it.
No drive replaces a backup, so keep copies of important files elsewhere.
Capacity: 2TB
2TB is a lot of room for an operating system, programs, photos, games and projects in one place. The brand says it is good for fitting more data into a smaller space.
Size and warranty
The drive measures about 3.9 x 2.8 x 0.3 inches (roughly 10 x 7 x 0.7 cm) and weighs around 0.1 lb (under 50 g). It has a 3-year warranty. Patriot lists Windows 7, 8.0, 8.1 and 10 as supported operating systems, with an asterisk on 7 and 8.0, so check the details for your version.
Who it suits
It suits people upgrading an older laptop or desktop from a hard drive, adding secondary storage, or refreshing a machine that has SATA bays but no M.2 slot. It is less suited to builds where a faster NVMe drive would fit.
What to check before you buy
- Drive bay: confirm your computer has a 2.5-inch SATA bay, and that 7mm height fits.
- Connections: you need a SATA data cable and a power connector, or a laptop bay that has them.
- Operating system: check support for your Windows version.
- Cloning or reinstalling: plan how to move your data, and back it up first.
- External use: a separate USB enclosure or adapter is needed to use it as an external drive.
