The NETGEAR PLP2000 is a powerline adapter kit, model PLP2000-100PAS. Powerline adapters send network data through a building's existing electrical wiring, which helps when Wi-Fi is weak or a device needs a wired connection that is far from the router.

How powerline networking works

One adapter plugs into an outlet and connects to your router by Ethernet cable. A second adapter plugs into an outlet in another room, and a device connects to it with its own cable. NETGEAR says the kit extends internet access to any room using existing wiring and is plug and play: setup takes minutes with a push of a button and needs no software.

Standards and speed

NETGEAR lists IEEE 1901 and IEEE 802.3 compliance and HomePlug AV2 technology, with speeds of up to 2000 Mbps. That figure is a theoretical link rate. Real throughput is typically lower and depends on the age and quality of the wiring, distance, and electrical noise from other appliances. The brand also lists MIMO with beamforming, which directs the signal for better coverage.

Two Ethernet ports and the extra outlet

Each adapter has two gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet ports, so you can connect, for example, a smart TV and a games console from one outlet. Each adapter also has a pass-through outlet with noise filtering. NETGEAR says this keeps the adapter from losing performance and means you don't give up a wall socket. Powerline adapters generally work best plugged straight into the wall rather than a power strip.

Where it helps

NETGEAR positions it for smart TVs, streaming players and game consoles, including 4K HD streaming and low-lag gaming. A wired link avoids some of the interference that affects Wi-Fi through thick walls. You can add more adapters to expand coverage.

Size and power

Each unit is about 2.8 x 5.3 x 1.5 inches (7 x 13.5 x 3.8 cm) per the listing, and the kit weighs 1.5 lb. Input power is 100-240V at 50/60 Hz, but the kit is listed as made for use in the US only.

Who it suits

It suits homes where Wi-Fi doesn't reach well and running Ethernet cable is not practical, such as a TV room in a distant part of the house.

What to check before you buy

  • Region: the listing says US use only.
  • Wiring: adapters need to be on the same electrical system; older wiring, or different circuits, may reduce speeds.
  • Outlets: plug directly into a wall outlet if possible.
  • Ports: confirm your router has a spare Ethernet port.
  • Other appliances: some devices create electrical noise; the manual may suggest placement.
  • Local codes and the manual: follow the instructions for plugging in.
