The MatataStudio Tale-Bot Pro is a screen-free coding robot for children of about three to five. Instead of a tablet or computer, the child presses command buttons to make the robot move across an interactive map, tell a story or draw. MatataStudio is the updated name of the brand formerly known as Matatalab.

Coding without a screen

Young children can learn the core ideas of programming without reading or typing. The Tale-Bot Pro uses buttons to give instructions, and the listing names three concepts it covers: commands (single instructions), sequences (putting them in order) and loops (repeating steps). The robot can hold up to 256 commands, so a child can plan a longer route, run it and see where it goes. If the result is wrong, they can change the order and try again, which is the basic idea of debugging.

The interactive map and stories

The kit includes a double-sided interactive map. The robot moves around it and gives voice feedback, which MatataStudio says builds a story-led learning environment. Children are meant to pick up language skills and stretch their imagination as they go. A recording function lets a child record their own voice commands and made-up tales and play them back through the map.

Walk, draw, sing, dance and speak

The robot can walk, draw, sing, dance, speak and record. The kit comes with two washable markers, which the robot uses for the drawing function. It is also compatible with Lego-style blocks, so children can build shapes and costumes on top of it. Ten languages are supported: English, French, German, Czech, Swedish, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Bulgarian and Thai.

What's in the box

  • The Tale-Bot Pro robot
  • One double-sided interactive map
  • A challenge booklet with 14 missions
  • A configuration card
  • Two washable markers

The package measures about 10.3 x 11.1 x 3.5 inches (26 x 28 x 9 cm). MatataStudio also sells activity boxes as extra learning material.

Who it suits

It suits parents, preschool teachers and homeschoolers who want a hands-on introduction to coding for young children, with no screen time. The touch-based controls need little language, and the listing says the combination of sounds, visuals and touch makes the play accessible. Older children who want to write real code will probably want a more advanced kit later.

What to check before you buy

  • Age fit: the listing targets ages 3-5; check the manual for the recommended age.
  • Batteries and charging: check how the robot is powered and what accessories you may need.
  • Language setting: confirm that your language is among the ten supported.
  • Markers and surfaces: use the supplied washable markers on the map, as the manual describes.
  • Extras: the Lego-compatible feature depends on the blocks you already have.
