The MatataStudio MT3-2 is a digital compound microscope that shows the view on a built-in 7-inch screen instead of through an eyepiece. That makes it easier for a group to look at the same slide, which is why the brand pitches it at classrooms, homes and labs, for children and adults alike.
Optics and magnification
The microscope has three objective lenses: 4x, 10x and 40x. MatataStudio gives the digital magnification as 400x to 1200x, with the figure depending on the lens in use and the screen display. Magnification on digital microscopes is usually quoted for the screen image, so it is not directly comparable with an eyepiece microscope's total. In practice, the 4x lens is for finding your specimen and the 40x for fine detail.
A screen you can share
The 7-inch IPS display rotates through 135 degrees, so it can be tilted for different seats or viewing angles. Because the image is on a screen, a teacher or a parent can point to what is visible while others look along. MatataStudio describes the compact design as intuitive for viewing.
Two lights for two kinds of specimen
There are two adjustable LED lights:
- Transmitted light shines up through the slide. This suits thin, transparent or translucent specimens, such as prepared slides.
- Incident light shines down onto the specimen from above. The brand lists coins, circuit boards and jewellery as examples of solid objects that suit it.
Having both lets you examine a prepared slide and a solid object on the same instrument.
Camera and storage
A 2MP Aptina CMOS sensor captures photos and video, and an 8GB SD card is included. You can save images to look at again, compare or share in a school project.
Stage and measurement
A 3D mechanical stage moves the slide with controls, which makes small, precise adjustments easier than pushing the slide by hand. The microscope also has a measurement function, which MatataStudio says allows you to size objects accurately.
Connecting to other devices
The MT3-2 supports HDMI, USB and WiFi output. MatataStudio says it works with phones, PCs and TVs, and with Android, Windows and iOS, so an image can go on a larger display for presentations or group learning.
In the box
The kit includes 10 prepared slides, so you can start looking straight away, and a storage case to protect the microscope between uses.
What to check before you buy
- Device compatibility: confirm which connection (HDMI, USB or WiFi) you will use with your phone, computer or TV.
- Space and weight: the packaged size is about 12 x 10 x 8 inches, so find a stable table with room for it.
- Power: check how it is powered and whether an outlet is within reach.
- Resolution: the camera is 2MP, which suits screen viewing and sharing; look at your needs before expecting large prints.
- Slides: 10 prepared slides are included; blank slides and cover slips are useful if you want to prepare your own.
- Supervision: younger children may need help with glass slides and focusing.
