The Lockly Secure Plus (model PGD728F) is a smart deadbolt that replaces a standard door lock with a keypad, a fingerprint reader and phone control. Lockly designs it for family homes, rental properties and offices where several people need entry without passing around physical keys.

Six ways to unlock

Lockly lists six methods: its PIN Genie keypad, the 3D fingerprint sensor, the app, voice control, a Scan to Open QR code, and a physical key. Having a mechanical key as a backup is a common feature on smart locks, and it means the lock does not depend on batteries or a phone alone.

The PIN Genie keypad

The touchscreen keypad shows four circles that carry the digits, and the numbers change position after each entry. The aim, says Lockly, is to stop someone watching over your shoulder from learning your code by the pattern of your finger taps. The code is six digits, and the listing describes a toughened-film touch screen.

Fingerprint access

The second-generation 3D biometric sensor stores up to 99 fingerprints, according to Lockly, and reads a print in about 0.3 seconds with the bolt opening in around 0.5 seconds. Fingerprint locks can be less reliable with wet, dirty or worn fingers, so it helps to enrol the same finger several times.

App, sharing and alerts

The free Lockly app handles settings and sharing. You can give family members their own codes, send eKeys and eBadges with a schedule, and revoke them later. Offline Access Codes work without Wi-Fi or an internet connection. Lockly says there is no monthly fee. The app can also send real-time alerts on door status, and the lock offers auto lock and one-touch lock.

Voice control and the Wi-Fi hub

Remote access and voice commands need the Secure Link Wi-Fi hub. The listing mentions it as included in one place and as sold separately in another, so check what arrives in the box. Once set up, you can use Alexa or Google Assistant to ask the lock's status or to lock and unlock, after enabling the Lockly skill or action.

Power and fit

If the batteries run flat, you can touch a 9V battery to the terminals on the outside of the lock to power it for entry. The latch has an adjustable backset of 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches, to suit most standard doors. The lock measures about 8.6 x 4.1 x 8.8 inches and weighs 3.6 lb.

Who it suits

It suits households that want keyless entry with shareable codes, hosts managing guest access, and anyone who often forgets keys. People who prefer simple, offline hardware may find a plain deadbolt enough.

What to check before you buy

  • Door measurements: confirm the backset, door thickness and bore hole against the installation manual.
  • Wi-Fi hub: check whether it is included, and whether you need remote access.
  • Smart home: confirm your voice assistant is supported.
  • Batteries: plan to replace them on a schedule and know where the 9V terminals are.
  • Installation: follow the manual and local building and fire rules.
  • Code and key habits: decide who gets which access, and keep the physical key somewhere safe.
