The HP Series 5 527sa is a 27-inch Full HD monitor for everyday work, study and entertainment. It uses an IPS panel, covers 99% of the sRGB colour gamut, refreshes at 100 Hz and has built-in speakers. It's a straightforward office and home display, and here is what the main specs mean.

Full HD on a 27-inch screen

The resolution is 1920 x 1080. On a 27-inch panel, pixels are larger than on a smaller display, so text and fine detail look less sharp than on higher-resolution 1440p or 4K screens at the same size. Many people still find it fine for documents, web browsing and video, especially at a normal desk distance. If you do detailed photo or design work, consider a higher resolution.

IPS panel and viewing angles

HP lists an IPS panel with 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles. IPS panels typically hold their colour and brightness better when viewed from the side than many other panel types, which is useful for shared screens or when you sit off-centre.

Colour, contrast and brightness

  • 99% sRGB: sRGB is the standard colour space for the web and most everyday content. Covering 99% of it means colours should look consistent for general use.
  • 1500:1 contrast ratio: the ratio of the brightest white to the darkest black. IPS panels usually have lower contrast than some other types, and this figure is HP's own.
  • 300 nits: a measure of peak brightness. It suits normal indoor lighting, but very bright rooms may call for more.

100 Hz refresh rate

Most basic monitors refresh at 60 Hz. At 100 Hz, the screen updates 100 times per second, which HP says gives smoother scrolling and motion. It's a modest step up, and you need a graphics output that supports it. Check the settings in your operating system.

Eye Ease and other comfort features

HP lists Eye Ease with Eyesafe certification, which it describes as an always-on low blue light filter that keeps colour accurate. The monitor has a tilt-adjustable stand, and HP's Display Center software includes an ergonomic setup guide. The stand doesn't mention height adjustment, so check how the screen height suits your desk.

Design, speakers and sustainability

HP describes a thin, light profile, integrated cable containment and an option for side-by-side screens. Two built-in 2-watt speakers cover casual audio, so for richer sound, external speakers or headphones are typical choices. The listing says the monitor uses 85% recycled materials and 5% ocean-bound plastics, with sustainably sourced packaging. It lists EPEAT Silver registration (status varies by country) and ENERGY STAR certification. The monitor measures about 23.9 inches wide by 14.0 inches high and weighs 7.2 lb (about 3.3 kg), and HP gives it a 1-year limited warranty.

Who it suits

It suits home offices, students and general use where a large, clean, colour-consistent screen is more important than high resolution or gaming speed. It's a good candidate for a dual-monitor setup, given its slim design.

What to check before you buy

  • Connections: confirm the ports you need (HDMI, DisplayPort and so on) match your computer.
  • Resolution: decide whether 1080p is sharp enough for 27 inches at your viewing distance.
  • Stand: check tilt only, and look at VESA mounting options if you need height or arm mounting.
  • Desk space: a 27-inch screen is about 24 inches wide.
  • Refresh rate: check your computer can output 100 Hz.
  • Warranty: read HP's terms for your region.
