The HP Series 5 524sw is a 23.8-inch Full HD monitor with an IPS panel and a 100 Hz refresh rate. It's a general-purpose screen for desks, built for everyday work, browsing and video, with a slim profile and thin edges that make it easy to place two side by side.

Resolution and panel

The screen has 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD) across a 23.8-inch diagonal. At that size, Full HD gives a pixel density that's sharp for text and video at a normal desk distance.

HP uses an IPS panel, with 178-degree viewing angles both horizontally and vertically. IPS panels typically keep colour and brightness consistent when you view them from the side, which suits shared screens and tilted positions.

Colour, contrast and brightness

HP lists 99% sRGB coverage. sRGB is the standard colour space for most web content and everyday software, so a screen that covers most of it should show colours as intended without special effort. It isn't a substitute for a professional wide-gamut screen for print work.

The contrast ratio is 1500:1, which HP says helps show differences in shadows and highlights. Brightness is 300 nits, a typical level for indoor use. Dim or bright rooms may call for adjusting it, and a sunlit window behind the screen can make 300 nits feel limited.

The 100 Hz refresh rate

Many office monitors refresh 60 times a second. At 100 Hz, motion, scrolling and cursor movement can look smoother. HP says it helps with clearer detail between frames. It's a modest step up for general use and light gaming, though dedicated competitive gaming monitors run faster. To use 100 Hz you'll need a computer and cable that support it.

Eye Ease and software

HP Eye Ease with Eyesafe certification is described as an always-on, true-color, low-blue-light filter built into the display, which HP says doesn't affect colour accuracy. HP Display Center is the companion software, with options to customise the display and an ergonomic setup guide.

Stand, design and materials

The stand tilts, so you can set the angle. The monitor is slim, with integrated cable containment to keep cables tidy. It measures about 21.1 inches wide and 12.4 inches tall (about 54 x 31 cm) without the stand's depth being a concern, and weighs 5.5 lb (about 2.5 kg). Note that it doesn't adjust in height or rotate, according to the listing's features.

HP says the series uses 85% recycled materials and 5% ocean-bound plastics, with sustainably sourced packaging. It lists EPEAT Silver registration (status varies by country) and ENERGY STAR certification. A one-year limited HP warranty applies.

Who it suits

It suits home offices, students and general desk use where a clear, colour-consistent Full HD screen is enough. It's less suited to photo or video editing that needs wide colour gamut, or to those who want height-adjustable or pivoting stands.

What to check before you buy

  • Ports: the listing doesn't list the inputs, so confirm that the monitor offers the connections your computer needs (such as HDMI or DisplayPort).
  • Refresh rate: confirm that your computer and cable support 100 Hz.
  • Desk space: check width and depth against your desk, and whether you want a monitor arm.
  • Stand: tilt only; check whether a wall or arm mount is possible.
  • Brightness: 300 nits suits typical rooms; think about window glare.
  • Warranty: read the terms of the one-year limited warranty.
