The HP Series 5 524da is a 24-inch Full HD monitor for home offices, study desks and everyday computing. It uses an IPS panel, has HDMI and VGA inputs, and includes built-in speakers and a portable USB dock. This page explains what its specs mean and what to check against your own desk and computer.

Screen, resolution and panel

The display is 24 inches across the diagonal with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080. At that size, Full HD gives a sharp, readable picture for documents, web browsing and video, and it is easy for most computers to drive.

HP lists an IPS panel. IPS screens typically keep colours and contrast consistent when you look at them from the side, which is helpful if two people share the screen or you sit off-centre. The listing gives a 5 ms response time, a figure that is generally fine for office work and general video. It also lists anti-glare coating and flicker-free operation, with a brightness of 300 nits. Nits measure brightness; 300 is a typical level for a room with normal indoor lighting.

Ports and sound

The monitor has one HDMI input and one VGA input, plus an audio jack for input and output. HDMI is the usual connection for modern laptops and desktops. VGA is an older analogue connection that is still found on some office PCs and older machines, so having both helps when you are connecting a mix of equipment.

Two built-in 2W speakers fire backward. HP says this keeps the desk clear of external speakers. Small built-in speakers are typically fine for system sounds and casual video calls; for music most people prefer headphones or a separate speaker.

The bundled dock

The listing says a Docztorm portable data hub, described as a special edition, is included, with a data sync rate of up to 5 Gbps. In general, a USB hub or dock like this adds extra ports for a keyboard, mouse, drives or other accessories. Check the listing and the dock's own documentation for its port types and how it connects to your computer.

Stand and design

The stand adjusts in height by 3.9 inches and tilts from -5 to +25 degrees. HP also includes an Ergonomic Setup Guide. The finish is metal grey with a three-sided borderless design, so two monitors placed side by side leave only a small gap between the images. Built-in cable management keeps leads neat. The monitor measures about 21.1 x 18.1 x 7.9 inches and weighs 7.7 lb (about 3.5 kg).

Who it suits

It suits home offices, students, and anyone who wants a second screen next to a laptop. The 1080p resolution works well for general office use; people who edit photos or video professionally often look for wider colour coverage and higher resolution.

What to check before you buy

  • Your computer's outputs: confirm it has HDMI or VGA, or that you have the right adapter.
  • Desk space: check the stand's footprint and height against your desk or shelf.
  • Wall mounting: the listing doesn't cover this, so check the manual or HP's product page for VESA mounting details.
  • Dock connection: check how the bundled dock connects, and what ports your computer offers.
  • Sound: if you need louder or fuller audio, plan for headphones or speakers.
