The HP OMEN 32q (2023) is a 32-inch gaming monitor with a QHD (2560 x 1440) IPS panel and a 165Hz refresh rate. It is designed for PC and console gaming, and it also works as a general desktop display. Here is what the main specifications mean in everyday use.

QHD resolution on a large screen

QHD sits between Full HD and 4K. On a 32-inch panel it gives roughly 92 pixels per inch, so images are sharper than Full HD at the same size, while the graphics card has far fewer pixels to draw than at 4K. HP says the resolution gives crisp visuals in games. Larger screens also give more room for desktop windows when you are not gaming.

165Hz and 1ms: smoother motion

A 165Hz refresh rate means the screen updates up to 165 times a second, against 60 on a standard monitor. Fast-moving scenes typically look smoother and are easier to follow. To benefit, your computer has to produce a high frame rate, so a capable graphics card matters.

HP lists a 1ms GtG (grey-to-grey) response time with overdrive. This measures how quickly a pixel changes shade; lower numbers reduce smearing on moving objects, which the brand calls motion blur.

Adaptive sync

The monitor lists AMD FreeSync Premium and VESA-certified AdaptiveSync. Adaptive sync lets the monitor match its refresh rate to the frame rate the graphics card produces, which reduces screen tearing and stutter. HP also says that the certification includes a lab-certified maximum refresh rate. Check that your graphics card supports adaptive sync over the connection you plan to use.

Colour and brightness

HP gives the colour coverage as 99% sRGB and 95% DCI-P3. sRGB is the standard for most web and game content, while DCI-P3 is a wider space used in cinema and some newer content. Coverage of both suggests a wide palette. Peak brightness is listed as 400 nits, which is enough for well-lit rooms and makes brighter highlights possible in content that supports it.

Console and PC connections

HP says the monitor went through more than 140 test cases for console compatibility, and that you connect it by HDMI. It also describes ports for a gaming PC, a console and a work PC. The box includes a power cord and a DisplayPort 1.4 cable. A console's maximum output may be lower than the monitor's 165Hz, so refresh rate and resolution depend on what the console supports.

Stand and setup

The stand tilts and pivots and offers 100 mm of height adjustment, and HP mentions cable management. The monitor measures about 32.3 x 20.5 x 6.9 inches and weighs 19.8 lb (about 9 kg). The OMEN Gaming Hub software lets you adjust settings and link the monitor with compatible PCs and accessories. HP states that the plastics contain 85% post-consumer recycled content under the EPEAT definition, and that the monitor has a 1-year limited warranty.

The listing's description calls the monitor curved, while the title and specifications do not mention a curve. Check the product page for the exact panel shape.

Who it suits

It suits gamers who want a large, sharp screen with a high refresh rate, and people who split a desk between play and work and want several inputs. It is a large display, so it needs a deep desk.

What to check before you buy

  • Graphics power: a QHD game at 165 frames per second needs a capable GPU.
  • Ports: check the HDMI and DisplayPort versions against your console or PC.
  • Desk size: a 32-inch screen is wide and the stand needs depth.
  • Panel shape: confirm whether it is curved or flat.
  • Colour needs: check the sRGB and DCI-P3 figures against your work.
  • Software: the OMEN Gaming Hub is a PC application, so check it runs on your system.
